Yeah, kinda thinking this one hasn't aged all that well ...

EDIT: Follow the link anyway. It's worth the culture shock.

Speaking of funny-ass SNL sketches, a "lost" SNL sketch which should be more widely known. In the same episode as the Masturbating Zombies, so it's rarely, if ever, seen.

Laverne had what could be described as a visual one: The cursive L on every piece of clothing she owned.
From that show, you did have the "Hello!" from Squiggy whenever he and Lenny would suddenly show up in a "speak of the devil" type moment.

    Some other earlier ones:

    "Sorry about that, Chief."
    "Missed it by THAT much."
    "Nip it!"
    "Sock it to me."

    Laugh-In had a few, IIRC.

The thing I remember about "Julia" is that it might have been the first "sitcom" to take itself semi-seriously. And I don't mean that in a bad way. Everyone else was falling over themselves looking for the next punch line. Carroll's series actually dealt with some issues, and did it with sincerity.

As far as that clip goes, I see what you mean. But you can also look at it as the Lloyd Nolan character, while he lived in the backward social climate of that time and used the parlance to go with it, ultimately saw through the race and treated her like a fellow human.

All true. Which is why I was surprised by that clip.

Something I had completely forgotten, but realized once I fell down this rabbit hole.

"Julia" seems oddly ahead of its time, or something, with its total lack of a laugh track. In fact, if you catch a scene on YouTube, the "sizzling" silence between character lines seems overpowering.
