    This chart is misleading. The league did not bother to calculate net average until 1976. For punters active before 1976 the chart uses gross yardage.

    Saw him play at Three Chopt Tech when he was at Southern Miss. RIP.

    Sounds as if he had a great publicist. And the Raiders were a favorite of TV broadcasters of his era because they were so colorful, so he probably got a lot of positive pub from them.

    He also played very few games in domes, which (IMHO) have been a tremendous help to punters/placekickers. .

    And when any discussion of the NFL's greatest punters begins, Johnny Hekker's in the conversation.

    I think Shane Lechler's probably at the top, at least in the modern era.
    Hekker does probably have a higher completion percentage than some HOF quarterbacks, though.
