Pretty damn close to Whistling Straits, too (and other great golf courses).

Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls are no where near Madison. Closer to Milwaukee.

But they are extremely close to the amazing Kohler-area golf courses of Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run.

What about a charitable scholarship in Craig Stanke's name at the University of Wisconsin or with the J-school at UW?

He still was active with the Daily Cardinal college paper alumni group (a Madison-area newspaper colleague told me this) and he was a huge Badgers fan.

A voice of reason, and I hope it's heard in that vein.

As someone who heard the same things on Ron's thread, about people contributing for donations and/or flowers for the service, I'm not sure if any actually did. Funding a scholarship takes a lot of money up front, and the reality of donating money for a lot of people is different after the emotion of the wanting to fades.

A bunch of wonderful tributes on this thread and someone has to go out and toss in a negative!?!?! C'mon man.

I can hear Stanke now if someone mentioned to him how many people came along with lines like no one would say a bad word about him.

"You're not talking to the right people."

Kidding aside, we've been told we'll get word of any scholarship fund/other donations and I can't imagine the line of people who will be ready to donate in Stanke's honor.

did not have the pleasure/honor to know craig but knew we were kindred spirits of the same era )late 70s-present) in the biz. heck, i only recently learned his handle stood for 'south florida,' not 'san francisco' i was only off by about 3,000 miles, right?

but as ijag and so many others who did know him have said, craig's words of wisdom will be sorely missed 'round here. :'( :'( :'(

I started a thread over two years ago about the passing of a man who gave me my first job in the profession and SF made the first comment, going back into his history to share a couple of thoughts about the person that gave him his first job.

Then he sent me a private PM, which he apparently both liked to do and was very good at, thanking me for the post because it had made him look up his mentor, who he hadn't thought about in a long time.

I have always said that when I pass, I will be happy if the group that gathers or talks about me after I am gone, can simply say, "he was a good guy."

    Craig. . . SF EXpress. . . was a good guy.

    Not in the least, Play.

These are some of the most moving/fascinating posts I've ever seen here. It absolutely kills me to know that Craig can't throw in his sagacious thoughts here, just as it kills me to know the context of these wonderfully heartfelt posts.

I just wanted to add my condolences to the thread. As many people have said on here, he brought a lot to the board and will be missed.

    RIP.

Gregg--Here's a story about the best boss you'll ever have:

A few years ago, there was some edgy discussion here about something you wrote, maybe the mailbag or something that set everyone off, I don't recall....and I guess I said something, um, unflattering. Sorry.

One minute later, I got a PM from Craig: "Hey, trust me, you got this one wrong."

And we had PM'd a lot over the years--first when some jackass changed his handle to a nasty parody of Craig's name and started ripping him, and when he shared his painful personal divorce story on the 'Is There A Such Thing As Love' thread, and at random times I don't even recall now. This time, he was so insistent that you were misunderstood and misjudged, all I could think was, 'Wow, have I ever had a boss that would do that for me?' (No. Has anyone?)

Still not sure I got it wrong, but the sheer force of his endorsement was enough to make me shut up about it. Can't imagine a better boss--or friend--to have in your corner. So very sorry for your loss.
