Yes, but every fan who wtrote a letter would probably BUY a copy to see if they made the cut.

One of the sports editors I had actually understood the business side of the newspaper business. He explained to me (and others) why The National was never going to work. He knew the ins and outs of production and circulation, etc. Regarding something like this, special sections, he said it was something you had to do. It helps with public relations, but it really costs you in the long run. It only works if it can be parlayed into subscriptions, but it usually isn't. You spend extra on staff, production, circulation. It costs more than a dollar or two to produce a paper. No subscription, no profits.

The Saturday LAT letters were must-reads back in the day. Like Morning Briefing.

Even their baseball roundups were unique. Dan Hafner had his tagline on them, and there were always some interesting nuggets in there (as opposed to just using the AP baseball capsules).

They weren't called the world champion for nothing.

I seriously doubt the fact only one ad ran in the section was made in order to make the special section "classy". Rather, my guess is that the paper could only sell one ad.

Also, I didn't see the section, so: Is that "ad" from the O'Malleys on the back page really an ad? I'm guessing it was a heartfelt tribute to Scully from the family and their decades with the team. So, yeah, they bought the space to publish, but that's not an ad.

I think I had about 10 published. The last one had to be a decade ago.
