Yeah, I handled writing all the obits today for whitey.

Saw him three years ago at Busch for Royals-Cards. He looked great for 89.

    He was there.

Sucks that there doesn't seem to be any managers in the game like him anymore. Or Sparky Anderson or Jim Leyland. Unless I'm missing someone.

My favorite Whitey Herzog story — which I’ve heard from many people and I’m sure has been told on this board before — involves the late blind broadcaster Joe Walker. Joe was something of a legendary figure in Atlanta press boxes. He’d dispute umpires’ calls and talk about great plays he’d “seen” when obviously he couldn’t really see them.

So during a press conference in Herzog’s office at a game in Atlanta, Joe starts his question with, “Whitey, I’ve seen your teams over the years, and I’ve seen…”

Herzog cuts him off and says, “Joe, you ain’t seen shit. You’re blind!”

Bochy is a little bit old school.

IIRC, Holtzman pitched his final game for the Cubs against the Cardinals (before Whitey became the manager).

Pretty sure that Whitey was a finalist for the Red Sox job before they gave it to Terry Francona. Might also have been Grady Little ... can't remember which job.

Yeah, Whitey was in the mix there at some point. I'm like you, though, cannot remember the exact timeline.

Letterman is still wondering if he got the Princeton job.

Whitey said in one of his books he would have loved managing at Coors. He said if he had the right pieces there he'd never lose.
