Just heard this, and I'm fairly blown away. Probably shouldn't be, but I am. RIP.

She is a first-ballot lock for the Rock 'n Roll HOF.

Jagger is slam dunk A1 everywhere.

Probably Chuck Berry. Probably Madonna. Probably Springsteen.

Shit, Amy Winehouse made A1 in the NYT.

When did she ever record a rock'n'roll song?

Holy hell. MTV is running a Whitney video marathon right now, and I totally forgot how awesome 80's music videos are ... if there's not a guy twirling around with a saxophone in front of a neon background, it's a disappointment.

Above the fold on A1 in any newspaper in the English-speaking world:

McCartney. Starr, but not as big as Sir Paul (unless he is the last to go, in which case it will be a huge huge deal, since the obituaries for the last Beatle will in effect be the obituaries for the group, too).

    Dylan.

Jagger. Richards if it's a slow news day.

    Elton John.

    Bruce Springsteen.

    Bono.

    Prince.

    Madonna.

    And that's about it.

Everybody else is a lower column or sidebar.

Not strictly a singer, but I think Cher makes it too.
