    I don't think Perry's catchy, I don't think it's tuneful, and I do think it's garbage.

A couple more names for A1 above-the-fold that I thought of:

    Brian Wilson

    Eminem

Brian Wilson has less chance of being above-the-fold than Whitney.

Whitney Houston could deliver goosebumps. I don't think Katy Perry is capable of that. Some voices are simply magic.

I disagree. He's an innovator/impact guy. I think that's something the NYT would go for.

I guess getting passed over for Beyonce for a potential $100 million payday on X-Factor was way too much to take....

But in the wake of her passing, Simon Cowell confirmed "The X Factor" rumors on "Piers Morgan Tonight" on Saturday, via The Hollywood Reporter:

"One of the names we were going to be talking about in [a Monday] meeting as a possible mentor on the new series of 'X Factor' was going to be Whitney Houston ... Given the choice, I would have liked to have taken her under my wing as well, because she would have been the ultimate, ultimate mentor to any contestant coming on the show ... She was undoubtedly the greatest superstars [sic] of all time. One of the greatest voices in our time we're likely ever to hear."

Is Whitney Houston joining Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid on "The X Factor’s" judges panel? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the six-time Grammy Award winner has been approached to join the show. With Mariah Carey -- Cowell's top choice since the initial casting of the show -- raising her newborn twins, it looks like Cowell has been after a whole range of superstar divas since January, including Houston, Katy Perry and Beyonce, who recently gave birth to her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/12/whitney-houston-the-x-factor-judge_n_1270361.html?ref=mostpopular

What is unfortunate is that Houston used that voice to produce disposable '80s pablum, though. You could almost praise Perry for doing much more with much less.

Just give the link without repeating it, DB. This crapola is taking up a screen at a time.

When people who are 48 years old die, more often than not you can rule out natural causes.

Right. But there's a difference between something people all across the country have in their houses that can cause this, and it being a coke death.

If you had any doubt at how great Houston was, compare her versions to what Hudson and Kahn will sing whenever that show is. Trust me, it will not hold up.

For females the list is Franklin and Houston, maybe Streisand. Everyone else is in a distant second place.
