Because it wasn't a live performance. She went into a studio someplace, recorded a great version of the SSB, then faked the live show. That (to me) diminishes the so-called live performance, which wasn't live at all.

I don't think Kate Smith faked "God Bless America" at the Spectrum.

    Vocals only?

Mariah Carey, Diana Ross, Ronnie Spector, Christina Aguilera, Janis Joplin, and Darlene Love are some others that jump to mind. Maybe Dusty Springfield, who sounds great to me, but I'm cringing because I might be shouted down by people who know how to judge this stuff better than I do. Hopefully that short, top-of-the-head list didn't just embarrass me.

While the death of Whitney Houston may be sad to some (I wasn't really a fan), it's not going to make me watch the Grammy's tonight.

Wonder if some news bureaus had a canned obit for her.

Six minutes after her death was announced there was already a three-page obit on ABC News.

You would have a hard time finding a bigger Alice in Chains fan on this board, but Whitney Houston was anything but bubblegum pop. People like her and Mariah Carey may not be your cup of tea but she was one of the best ever

The Phil Collins thing is pretty interesting -- didn't really consider him until Dooley and Bubbler mentioned it, without even including arguably his most successful song. It was "Take A Look at Me Now" from the Against All Odds soundtrack. He also had "Easy Lover" with Philip Bailey.

Am not a Collins fan (never was), but, in retrospect, he was a pretty huge star in the 80s.

Same deal with Houston. Again, was never a fan, but you cannot underestimate her impact.
Her Grammy performance in 1986 was unreal. She had such presence and power of voice.

Bobby Brown should burn for this.

Song's actually called Against All Odds and it's hands down my favorite Phil Collins song.

I'll be damned if you didn't correct almost 30 years of being wrong on my part.

What in the world does Phil Collins have to do with Whitney Houston?

And what's with the run on Phil avatars?
