They don't. He was named at the beginning of the thread as a given. And Ringo if Paul kicks it first, because it'd be the "obituary for the group."

We often debate who is an automatic sports figure for A1.

Ali always tops the list, and I guess Tiger or Michael Jordan would be next.

Nah. Whitney Houston was bigger/more influential/more culturally important than Janet Jackson.

    Wasn't it a public restroom?

Actually whose death would be bigger - him or McCartney? It's not that easy of an answer.

I love Pearl Jam. I love Eddie.

But I think there was only one Seattle sound figure who gets A1 above-the-fold treatment in the NYT, and he died 18 years ago.

That's a really, really tough one.

The only parallel between Whitney and Katy Perry is they both chose to marry talentless, drug-addled shitheads.

    Right, Ted? We outta' here...

I'm not so sure, plus she has the Jackson name going on. I think Janet Jackson's death would have as much impact as Whitney's. Maybe neither deserves A1, but I think she's up there based on how Whitney was played.

Initially, I mentioned I appreciate Perry as a compliment to Whitney Houston - as in, "Hey, I can appreciate a good pop song for what it's worth. I EVEN like Katy Perry."

When I say Perry's songs are superior, that's largely because of the horrible '80s stench that attaches to Whitney Houston's stuff.

I know they are not from the same area, but Carlos Santana has a better chance of going A1 in the New York Times than Eddie Vedder.

McCartney, and it's not close. And that's not to diminish Jagger in any way.
