    Very true.

Hell, the John Doe version of the song you hear on the jukebox in "The Bodyguard" is better than Whitney's.

Linda Ronstadt's version was pretty good too. In my opinion, it was more like singing and less like vocal gymnastics, a term I often used to explain why I thought Whitney Houston needed to dial it down several notches on a lot of what she sang. The person who said music is knowing which notes to leave out -- as in writing -- knew a thing or two.

I'll take Diana Ross in any contest with Phil Collins.

Be interesting to go back and read some of those movie reviews. As I recall, her performance was panned in a few corners.

Might want to check your homework. "Land of Confusion" and "Jesus He Knows Me" were Genesis ... "In The Air Tonight" was Phil solo. So which avenue were you looking to travel?

Let's try Phil Collins. One track per album? Not on his first four.

"Face Value" : "In The Air Tonight," "Hand In Hand," "I Missed Again" and "If Leaving Me Is Easy."
"Hello, I Must Be Going" : "I Don't Care Anymore," "Do You Know Do You Care?," "It Don't Matter To Me" and "The West Side"
"No Jacket Required" : "Long Long Way To Go," "Don't Lose My Number," "Take Me Home" and "We Said Hello Goodbye" (probably his most underrated track ... if you like "Against All Odds," this one might work for you, too)
" ... But Seriously" : "Hang In There Long Enough," "Something Happened To The Way To Heaven," "I Wish It Would Rain Down," "Heat On The Street" and "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning."

No defense for anything after that - agreed that much of that could be too saccharine - though the work he did with Disney for "Tarzan" was pretty decent. And "Sussudio" wasn't his best moment - anything but - but he had something some of us posters sorely lack ... a sense of humor and an ability to laugh at himself.

And aside from "You Can't Hurry Love," what other Supremes moments were there before doing "Going Back" a couple of years back?

If you're that anxious to discuss 1980s-era Genesis - or any other era - let me know. Otherwise, do your homework before posting out your ... well ... you know ...

Yes, this is horrendously overdone and overanalyzed and no, Phil Collins is not above criticism. But the post I answered was crap and needed correction. Carry on ...

So would Berry Gordy. Still doesn't mean she's good.

Any contest? OK, let's put Diana Ross behind a drum kit.

    This should be fun ...

Sam, of the list you posted above, I've never heard of 12 of them. Not not heard them. Not heard OF them.

    How is that possibly relevant?

The charge was that Collins only had "one badass song per album." He says there were more, and lists them. They didn't have to be on Top 40 radio to count. Ever heard of a deep cut?

There are 18 perfect tracks on "Exile on Main Street" and I bet you haven't heard of one of those, either.
