The number of times I've heard The Star-Spangled Banner and thought it truly was great is probably in the single digits and, IMHO, Whitney Houston isn't on the list.

    But, RIP.

Did Phil Collins get fired by a soulless corporate newspaper chain?

I'm not being a smartass, but I like your daughter's reaction.

I've seen some great anthems over the years, but I still think hers was probably the best...

Faith Hill was awesome. I don't remember what year that was. Probably 1999 or 2000. That's probably the best one I've seen live.

Ray Charles sang America The Beautiful at the Giants-Ravens Super Bowl. It's probably the only thing I remember about that game. When you stand through as many anthems and performances as many of us have, it's pretty easy to get jaded, but I had chills all over as he sang.

What deaths of singers messed you up?

I remember Lennon being shot because it was one of just a handful of times I've seen my soulless asshole of a father cry.

I remember being pretty floored when Cobain died because I had just seen him in concert a couple months before and I was also only 19 or 20 when it happened.

Which has nothing to do with the initial issue: whether Phil Collins was as big as Whitney back in the day

The death of Freddie Mercury hit me hard. The one that hit me the hardest was Michael Jackson. I'm a huge fan, saw him in concert seven different times and I was amazed every time.
