    That's a very long piece that threw a lot of band names at me that I never heard of, but it was interesting. Rock is dead as a commercial force. That much is sure. In a way, it signed its own death warrant when the Beatles and Beach Boys transformed it from music you dance to into music you listen to, more like classical. Kids want to dance. Girls especially want to dance.

    Also, as the piece alludes to, the idea of strumming a clunky, limited physical instrument is as quaint to young musicians in 2017 as the daily newspaper is to young aspiring journalists.

    Good point about the electric guitar ... as the article notes, all guitar music is thrown into the same category now. So much of pop music is made without guitars.

    The writer made a good point about the increased diversity in music, too — even in the rock genre, long dominated by white suburban dudes.

    And for the record, the Japandroids kick ass. Hoping to see them on tour this spring.
