Rocky Mountain News "tweets" dead boy's funeral, now (thankfully) being savaged

I agree that this was a poor job all around, but I've got to believe that every one of the people blasting Twitter have never used twitter.

That's pretty lame. I couldn't understand why anyone would have a facebook or myspace page, either. But I have changed my tune.

So before you bash the message deliver system, why not try to found out what the hell you are talking about.

It's sort of like the sports writers who have never been to an auto race or soccer game but bash those sports.

All I ask is that you condemn out of knowledge, not ignorance, please.

Ace, I've never used it, but that doesn't mean I can't see multiple opportunities where it could be useful. (Jimmy O pointed out several just a few posts above. ) It also doesn't mean I can't see that this wasn't one of them.

    I love Facebook.

I'm sure twitter can be a good thing under the right circumstances. A football game, maybe a trial, a schoolboard meeting if you're into that kind of thing.

A child's funeral? Not so much...

Just saying that some on the thread were bashing Twitter without really knowing what it is and obviously never using it. I don't really care what people are doing every damn minute of their lives, but I can see some practical applications for the technology.

Ace -- I'm condemning out of knowledge. My cousin tweets as his cat. It's pretty funny. For me, that's a good use for Twitter. During the Oscars, E! online usually has someone live blogging from the press room. Again, that would be another good use for Twitter (not sure if they use it or not for that). A kid's funeral, even if it's a big news story in a community? No. A funeral is not an appropriate place to be using a cell phone or a Blackberry. Maybe that should be the line in the sand.

Except that people nowadays think that being on their cell/Blackberry everywhere/all the time is appropriate. I am as guilty as a lot of people -- I'm constantly on my Blackberry, but I am also considerate of other people and I think that's what missing these days - consideration for others.

What I keep going back to, though, is what is the value for the reader in this case?

I agree with everything you say, Dyno. I was addressing people who were dissing Twitter in general -- not just this misuse of it.

yeah, was just about ready to post the fact that I am now news.

pretty sure a reply to my reply will not be forthcoming now, eh? (and that future gig at the rmn was probably a longshot anyway.)

I'll just sit and wait for my eventual outing by mr. temple, now.
