We are going to need to get an SportsJournalists.com official statement up on the wire. Can someone handle for us. I think we need to offer the usual speedy recovery but we also need to mention the need to wear helmets.

    A. Wire reports are now using the term "seriously injured," which is never a good thing.

    B. Do attempts at humor in these situations do something I don't understand? I enjoy a good joke as much as the next guy but someone is wracked up after a wreck. Football player or not, I don't see the humor.

Seems like too big a risk for juxtaposing that would cause us great embarrassment.

Boom, why don't you do it? You're good at the official SportsJournalists.com condolence statements, just please stress the importance of wearing a helmet, please, please, please.

Agreed that there's nothing funny about it, Moddy, but I'm not going to wring my hands about it, either. Anybody who rides a motorcycle without a helmet immediately loses any sympathy they might have had from me.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not glad it happened. But I'm not going to shed a tear for him, and I think those cracking jokes are probably coming from the same side of the sympathy spectrum. They're just expressing it in a different way.

Roethlisberger, who led the Steelers to a Super Bowl championship this year, slammed into the windshield, rolled over the car and landed on the pavement, striking his head again, said a woman who witnessed the accident.

The witness, who declined to give her name, asked Roethlisberger several times if he was OK. He eventually replied, "My name is Ben."

    He asked: "Where am I?"

"You're at the Armstrong Tunnel," the witness said.

"What city is that in?" he said.

    "Pittsburgh," the woman replied.

Roethlisberger fell silent for about a minute and then tried to stand up.

    "I'm OK," he said.

"No you're not," said the woman, who instructed him to stay still.

    True that. No Irish here.
But that's an explanation that helps me understand anyway. It's an Irish thing.

    We thank you.

I do hope he's all right.

Never understood not wearing a helmet.
