Desk, They are acting like, well, Germans, because with the mess their common currency is facing THEY are the ones who are forced to bear the cost -- for countries whose fiscal policies they had no say over, and had no control over. Sure, they are acting like Germans. It was the problem with the Euro all along. A shared currency by two dozen countries with differing views on sovereign responsibility, and fiscal planning (and in the case of fuck up countries like Greece -- no planning) that is all over the map. It binded them together, even though a country like Germany actually has an economy (the way the U.S. does) that allows it more leeway when it comes to profligate debt/spending, because the economy can produce more to keep the ability to borrow alive longer.

But when you put yourself into a mess, as much of Europe has, than rely on someone else to bail you out, you put yourself at their mercy. And the Germans are the ones in that position, since they are the ones being asked to write the checks.

I honestly think the Germans didn't want to bail out Greece. Which is why they made the measures they asked for in return for staving off from technical default (which is still default, so it is a farce, anyhow) so draconian. I think they were hoping that Greece would say no (Greece hates Germany already, dating to the Nazi occupation), Greece would exit the Euro and Germany would get to act like the Euro fell apart despite their efforts at keeping it together.

I think they were shocked when Greece took the deal as offered.

Really, who will the married female homeowner in Ohio going to vote for? That's the ball game.

As a voting bloc, that is a group that is often in play on image, speeches, looks. They liked Gore and Obama but not John Kerry.

Good point on Bush in 2004. He ran more conservative than he did in 2000. It worked because home ownership and consumer confidence were high. Those are much lower in 2012. Perhaps that benefits Obama to keep running left.

I do wonder if Obama can capture the middle because he didn't do a Clintonesque jump to the middle, circa 1995.

I still believe Obama will try and win this outright before July. If it is close, he will call up Hillary to deliver the women.

Hillary as the running mate? No.

Joe Biden will be Obama's running mate.

Only a real -- not a pretend -- medical issue will prevent this.

    This is such bull shit.

I'm willing to believe that George W. Bush, Teddy Kennedy, Al Gore, Dan Quayle, and countless others got into colleges for reasons other than their academic credentials.

But, if there is any evidence that Mitt Romney was anything other than a top student, I'd like to see it.

As for his business career, did he use his dad's "connections" to go into politics or the auto industry? Did he join one of the "Big Five" accounting/consulting firms out of school? Certainly his "connection" could have landed him at a more "prestigious" firm than Boston Consulting Group.

As this Times article about Romney and Bibi Netanyahu's relationship points out, BCG was not such a firm in 1970:

Going to BCG was a risk. Romney didn't need his dad's "connections" to go to work there. He had a Law degree and an MBA from Harvard. And he graduated at/near the top of his class.

BCG would have been thrilled to land Romney.

And, when he joined Bain, it was because its founder recruited him based on his work at BCG. Bill Bain worked with Romney at BCG. He knew him and his work. His connections weren't what got him the job.

Bill Bain again chose Romney to lead Bain Capital based on his work.

And, since he made his partners and investors millions, I'd say Bill Bain made a good choice.

BO's got the women, and at a sufficient ratio. The GOP neanderthals -- who must be catered to, by the GOP suits -- have assured that.

I don't disagree with this. BO has the women, especially the single women. I just wonder if he has the married women in the swing states. Women who go to church, handle the household finances, know their house is losing money or their husband is worried about layoffs.

Obama has all of the Elaine Benes single women. That's clear. Does he have the women that voted for him in 2008 who are usually middle of the road?

    Dude, just, no.

This is such a hodgepodge of nonsense. You're refighting some sort of mixture of old wars, primarily based on the 2004 election.

Clinton will not be on the ticket. The election won't come down to Ohio. And women will vote heavily for Obama.

And there is no middle. Anyone who hasn't made up their mind by now isn't likely to be persuadable by rational means. They'll break somewhere around 55-45 in the direction of the challenger, like they always do, and that will be that.

Hispanic turnout will be the defining factor in the election. Full stop.

If Romney picks Rubio as running mate will that sway Hispanic vote in his favor?

    This is correct.

Polling shows no movement to a Romney ticket with the addition of Rubio.

All he can do is hope they don't show up.

And that they don't get too upset when SCOTUS affirms all provisions of the Arizona immigration legislation.

No way for Obama to lose, there, is there?

They strike it down, it's a vindication for the justice department (and a public policy win for all of us).

They affirm and they hand him a golden campaign issue.
