Saddam Hussein, of course, could have been made dead in 1991 if only Daddy Bush had given the word.

But he chickened out and all it took was 15 years, 3,000 American lives and five trillion bucks to get the job done.

Me, too. Bush was wrong, Cheney was wrong, neocons were wrong. We paid an ungodly price for it. So let's not begin trying to scrub the Bush legacy with such garbage.

Cran, that's fine. Have no problem with you saying it.

I might debate the point, but yours is a legitimate position.

Most of the Dems -- especially the elected ones -- won't say that. They want it both ways.

    Cuba? What about North Korea?

Why won't YF stand up for the oppressed peoples there? Wouldn't we be better off if their dictatorial leaders weren't in power? Why isn't Mitt Romney urging military action against these countries? It worked so well in Iraq!

I'll say this about Iraq -- I think the end result (removing Saddam) was positive. But a positive end result does not justify the means used to get there.

I detest the idea that we were led to the war by false assumptions and outright lies. Looking at what we know now about what the White House knew then, I don't think invasion was justified, not based on the argument made to the American people. You don't send Americans to their deaths based on half-truths.

I also feel the war in Iraq cost us invaluable manpower when it came to chasing bin Laden, which should've been our focus in the years after 9-11. Instead, we waged a false war in a country we shouldn't have been in.

Did the war in Iraq oust a horrible dictator and possibly plant the seed for democracy in the area? Sure. Does that make it right for the president to have lied to us and withheld pertinent information to get us there? No, it doesn't.

Put it this way. If there had been no 9/11 would any American have supported an invasion of Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hussein? My guess is it would've been a small minority at best. We violated longstanding American principles of government out of fear and ignorance. He wasn't the only miserable tyrant on earth. We manage to live with all the others, because war is not an optimal solution to many problems.
The contention overthrowing Saddam led to the Arab revolutions is supported by very little evidence and a whole lot of wishing that a national shame never took place.

Chris, I say this as a Democrat. Don't mistake pep talks for analysis. And don't obsess over daily poll numbers in May. You'll burn out by July 4.

Thank God y'all were a tiny minority in 1941.
