I am saying Romney has no chance. I am also saying the GOP doesn't really want him to have one, and sees no profit in winning at this point. I imagine the old loyalist urges will kick in for awhile, but they'll fade. Obama's goooood for business.

Agree. The Republican convention is going to be dead.

The elitist John Kerry served in Viet Nam and then spoke against it because of the absurdity. George W. Bush got into the Air National Guard and Dick Chaney "had other priorities".

Actually, I don't believe that Republicans, at least the most powerful ones, don't want Romney to win. They certainly want Obama to lose, and that's plenty.

Plus, what the SuperPAC and ALEC types love about Romney is that it's clear he will say and do ANYTHING to get elected. I mean, even more than most candidates. He's an easily controlled puppet. Plus, with at least a House majority maintained for Republicans (given how in many states they got to draw the seats for redistricting), there's no one at the top to stop the Tea Party Express.

And in 2004 no one cared. In 2012 they care less. One of Kerry's huge mistakes was playing up his Viet Nam service.

Kerry also never tried to hide his wealth or sell himself as someone who wasn't born into it, and his positions on taxation and services didn't follow the "I got mine, fuck you" stance.

What about that yacht that he kept moored in Rhode Island?

  10. Well to be fair - the taxes in Rhode Island are much lower than Massachusetts. Even though the yacht was to be moored at the ultra swank Nantucket - who can blame the guy for trying to avoid the extra taxes? I mean his heiress wife only probably gives him so many million a year to live on.

All I know is that in 2004, the male cheerleader was widely thought to be more credibly tough than a man who singlehandedly chased down an enemy who was wielding a fully-loaded rocket launcher.

That tells me something important to this election: Campaign staffs matter almost as much as candidates, and Bush's were brilliant.

I don't think Obama is a stronger candidate than Romney. But I do think that Obama has put together a much better campaign staff and organization, and that'll probably push him across the finish line.

But I think people forget how much racism is still going to impact this vote. Obama should have won 2008 by a lot wider margin than he did, given the relative quality of the campaigns and the national mood at the time.

The Bushes keep their boats at the compound in Kennebunkport.
