Ron Borges - Plagiarist?

We're talking about two different things. My post was not specific to Borges, it was in response to Pope Dirk writing that every item in a notes column needs to be attributed. You didn't follow the thread very well.

Imagine how much better off we would all be if everyone had heeded this post from three days ago.

    Is plagiarism "stealing", or "fraud"?

As in using someone else's words and portraying them as your own?

Are you writing exactly what the guy showed you?

I don't know if you should attribute, but you definitely should be fired for being so fucking lazy.

I feel much better, back agreeing with Frank.

So, your paper wouldn't have bylines... just "Staff Writer" at the top?

I think that if something has been done wrong and can be fixed, it should be fixed immediately.

according to blondie this is not plagiarism:

    "sad example, verrrrry.
Borges wrote the same thing you wrote after returning from the restroom and looking at your laptop - or something tantamount to that.
Borges would have digested what was in the notes network and put them into his own words, had he not claimed somebody else's under his own byline but had been merely looking at a notepad and writing what he saw.

sentence structure inverted - not plagiarism.

    even better:
how about replacing "merely" with "simply". not plagiarism.
how about addding another "verrrry" to the first "verrry". not plagiarism.

that, my friends, is blondie's definition of the difference between honor and disgrace.

It's true that a big-city police department is not going to spend a lot of time chasing after vermin who steal hubcaps when there is bigger quarry. But that doesn't mean that the culprits are any less scummy or deserve an iota of our respect.

So here's what I've done. I sent Getty a link to your blog and informed them that you've been bragging on this site about stealing their content. If I see any AP photos on your blog next week, I'll send a link to AP. If the self-promoting Big Lead is linked to again on Romenesko, I'll send Romenesko a link to this thread.

Some of these blogger parasites are a bit smug. It is harder than they think to attract an audience when you have to work within the law and pay for content.

I don't like what Borges did, but it isn't in any way as bad as Big Lead knowingly stealing copyright material and continuing to do so after being called on it here.

Actually, I just pre-empted your move and emailed a friend at the AP. Still waiting to hear back on what their policy is. If they have beef and want us to stop, no problem. I don't have any contacts at Getty, but I look forward to their email.
There's never been intent to steal - unlike Borges, Blair, etc.
Thanks to you, Frank, we'll start giving full credit to any and all photos we use.

Sometimes, it's good to get a swift kick in the ass. Thanks. And mostly, I'm honored that you feel a tiny blog such as ours is having that kind of impact that you're willing to take the time out of your day and fire off emails.

Credit is not the issue. Stealing content that legit media have to pay for is the issue. If AP and Getty will let you have it for free, they should let us have it for free. All of us!

I think you are lying about your preemptive e-mail. You didn't allow my post on your blog informing your readers that the Getty photo accompanying the post costs $145, but that The Big Lead simply stole it.

    You're scum. Face it.
