At times, I felt we were being taught by a horse.

 

$9.375. ... I wonder what percentage how many of today's journalists can do that math in their heads.

 

Probably about the same number as convenience-store cashiers who, on a sale of $1.78, don't know how much change to give you from $2.03 until they look at the electronic readout on the cash register.

 

I've seen them give me my three pennies back, then two dimes, and then two more pennies. Arrgh.

 

Have you ever tried to give them the extra change, like 17 cents, so you can get an entire dollar back? They look at you like you're trying to draw them into a game of three-card monte.

 

And then that day when I handed over a $10 bill for a $3.50 purchase and got back change for a $20 ...

 

And... what did you do then?

 

That was the day I stopped caring about correcting dumbass clerk mistakes.

Because it basically was this guy ...

 

We don't do pennies here. We round up or down and it's still a struggle.
