Yeah, doesn't sound like Phil's most brilliant play. But then again, I don't know how many chips he had, position, what the sequence of raises was, etc.

I certainly would have had a hard time calling with 7's that early in the tournament.

It was the exact same hand last year.

Hellmuth was down to around 2,500 right before he went out today. I assume he was trying to double up and be competitive. He might want to show up on time next year. It hurts to be down a couple thousand if you are cold decked early.

Dude I know from playing here in Ottawa -- Marc Karam, who finished fourth in the EPT at Monaco this year -- got knocked out in an hour... Holding 10-10, flop J-10-5... Raise, re-raise, re-re-raise, all-in... Other player shows J-J and that's all there is to it... Funny game, how one tourney you can just run wild and then the next, a cold deck knocks you flat on your ass after two hands.

It certainly breeds the Buddha in me.

Apparently Louie Anderson is doing well in Round 3 today.

    Mike "The Mouth" Matusow Eliminated
At the ESPN featured table, Mike "The Mouth" Matusow calls all in on for approximately $10,000 on a flop of 947, after heavy preflop betting. Both players flip up their hands, Matusow with 77 and his opponent with KJ. The A falls on the turn, and Matusow now has to dodge only a diamond or he will double up. The river brings the 3, and a very dejected Mouth is sent to the rail.

***As much crap as he gets I've heard he's a nice guy. He just continues to take bad beats it seems. Yeah I know of his blow-ups but everytime he goes out it just seems like he's been victimized.

That is an awful beat for Matusow.

Steve Dannenmann is doing well so far today, as is Daniel Negreanu.

    Jen Harman is out.

He had to know he was facing a flush draw there. He had the best of it, but he knows how this thing is played. Not saying he should have gotten away from it, but the best guys can make that laydown. Mike can't because he's too concerned with being right to ever win like he should.

    Good assessment of Matusow.

Also, Sam Farha busted out in an hour. Full House lost to Quad 6s. Guess that was a little karma for last year's beat of Oliver Hudson.

Was the KJ suited in diamonds, or was it a flush with four diamonds on the board?  If it was the former, perhaps Matusow should have laid it down.  If he lost to runner-runner diamonds, that's a different deal.

Either way, clearly the hardest thing for these pros now in the Main Event is coming up against mediocre players who you simply can't get off their hands.  KJ isnt that strong of a hand, and once it completely missed this guy he probably should have gotten away from it.

Update: Phil Gordon, Antonio Esfandiari and Jean-Robert Bellande are gonzo.

That's exactly right. The flop came down with two diamonds, so he had a big made hand and was trying to push out the draws. The problem is, as you said, these guys will not be pushed off their draws ... and sometimes they make them, as this donk did on the river. It's like playing with my mother-in-law who insists she wins more hands with 7-2 than paint. Bottom line is, Matusow should probably know better at this point.
