    It's a final: Calgary beats Minnesota 5-3.

Wild were up 3-0 after the first period in that one. Flames just ran them over in the second and third.

Somebody must have kicked them in the ass during intermission.

In the old days, fighting was prohibited on Hockey Night in Canada — unless Bob Cole happened to be in the room.

Fisticuffs on the ice? Cut to a crowd shot.

The no-fighting on television rule is long gone, because today Hockey Night airs more highlight clips of fights than any comparable telecast.

To get an idea of how the show's policy has evolved, or devolved, a good start is Ralph Mellanby's new book, Walking With Legends.

    Lindros is retiring ...

He hasn't made it official yet, but Eric Lindros is calling it quits and – if all things work out for him, he's headed toward a new career with the NHLPA.

Following Paul Kelly's introduction as Executive Director of the Player's Association, Eric Lindros stated bluntly his playing career is behind him - with too many health issues to entertain the notion of a return.

Lindros acknowledged his interest in the newly created position of NHLPA ombudsman, the principal liaison between the players and their leader.

Lindros spoke of how seamless the transition might be and how passionate he is about the Associations future. However, he cautioned the job has not been offered and his involvement will be determined by the players.

Although, the union's constitution allows for more than one ombudsman, Lindros is the likely candidate and has the full support of Paul Kelly.

As pathetic as the Rangers have been at creating scoring chances, this may be the opponent to turn Marty Brodeur's season around.

Rangers really need to get the offense going. Other than Shanahan, no one is shooting the puck and no one is screening goaltenders.
