I'm hanging onto Brodeur in my Facebook hockey pool. There's no way he can continue to play like this.

I've got Brodeur in my Yahoo league and I'm definitely holding onto him.

I never knew Facebook had fantasy hockey. But, then again, I never go to Facebook.

Wow. I didn't think the Leafs were this smart. They've offered John Tavares a contract to play with their AHL farm team, the Marlies.

By offering a deal for at least three years or longer, the source said Ferguson hopes to convince Tavares to remain Leaf property and opt out of the NHL draft. Tavares is eligible for the 2009 entry draft.

Under the collective agreement, if a player refuses to sign with the NHL team that drafts him and does so for the next two years he becomes a free agent. That means Tavares could become an unrestricted free agent in 2011, when he turns 21, and sign an NHL contract with the Leafs.

I've seen Tavares play since he came into the OHL--he may be the next Sid the Kid but the knock (justified, I think) is his skating.

I'm sure FoF has a more learned opinion on this---I'm basing it on from what I've seen.

Wow. I had no idea teams could do that.

Damn intelligent move by the Leafs.

But it could open up a Pandora's Box, rendering the draft all but obsolete.

The chances of the Leafs pulling this off seem remote.

  8. Doubt it. This is something you're only going to see under the right circumstances, when a very special talent doesn't like where he's headed. Interesting to see how this turns out, but I don't think it spells doom for the draft. There are way too many kids who are just happy to have a team want them.

The kid has a late birthday and I doubt the NHL are going to make special consideration for early entry.

It may end up dependent upon how he does this season. But I doubt he should have to spend another season in junior. A year in the As might be better for him.

I'm pretty sure that the league isn't going to rewrite the rules for Tavares. If they weren't going to let Crosby in early--and Crosby was more NHL ready than Tavares is--they ain't going bend over backwards for Tavares.

Yes, but I don't think Crosby's birthday came into play in any way. Tavares misses the draft because his birthday is five days late.

You're right. This "debate" is all about Tavares' birthday.

I was talking about skill sets and overall game.
