UPDATE: Wow. Only way Gagner could have undressed Harding any more was to circle round the goal after he scored and pull his pants down.

Chara is an absolute beast. If all he did was fight he'd be the toughest guy in the league.
He's a wrestler by trade. He used to abuse people when he played in PG

I remember a fight he had with McCabe, prior to the lockout. Chara ragdolled McCabe, who's a pretty good-sized man.

It was a one-sided fight. Chara tossed McCabe around like he weighed 25 lb.

By offering a deal for at least three years or longer, the source said Ferguson hopes to convince Tavares to remain Leaf property and opt out of the NHL draft. Tavares is eligible for the 2009 entry draft.

Under the collective agreement, if a player refuses to sign with the NHL team that drafts him and does so for the next two years he becomes a free agent. That means Tavares could become an unrestricted free agent in 2011, when he turns 21, and sign an NHL contract with the Leafs.

I've seen Tavares play since he came into the OHL--he may be the next Sid the Kid but the knock (justified, I think) is his skating.

I'm sure FoF has a more learned opinion on this---I'm basing it on from what I've seen.

TAVARES IN AHL AN UNLIKELY SCENARIO

The same rules that will keep John Tavares out of the NHL will prevent him from playing in the AHL next season, despite attempts by the Toronto Maple Leafs to sign the 17-year-old phenom to a minor pro contract.

AHL president David Andrews, responding to reports that the Maple Leafs have offered Tavares a contract to play for the Toronto Marlies next season, said the league’s by-laws with respect to player eligibility are the same as the NHL’s. AHL by-law 2(d) states that only players who have reached their 18th birthday by Sept. 15 of that season are eligible to play.

Andrews said the rule could be changed with a 75 percent approval from the league’s board of governors, but didn’t seem optimistic that would happen.

â€œGiving you the benefit of my 20 years of experience on the board, it hasn’t been very often that an amendment to our by-laws relative to players has been approved when it affects competitive balance,â€ Andrews told thehockeynews.com. â€œThose three-quarters of the teams that would need to vote in favor are going to have to play against this guy.â€

Players under the age of 18 have played in the minors in the past, notably Radek Bonk, Petr Sykora and Sergei Samsonov, but all played in the defunct International Hockey League and not the AHL.

Tavares, who is not eligible to be drafted into the NHL until 2009, leads the OHL in scoring with 15 goals and 28 points in 12 games. Last season he was named Canadian Major Junior Hockey player of the year after scoring 72 goals (beating Wayne Gretzky’s record for 16-year-olds) and 134 points in 67 games.

Asked if there is anything in an OHL player’s standard contract that would prevent him from jumping to the AHL, OHL commissioner David Branch told thehockeynews.com: â€œI’m really not familiar with this story. In terms of some of the legal aspects, the National Hockey League (is) who should respond.â€

Both the Toronto Star and Globe and Mail reported the Leafs hope to sign Tavares to a three-year contract and then convince him to forego the 2009 draft and then declare himself an unrestricted free agent in 2011.

Thestar.com says the Leafs would like to pursue one of three options: sign Tavares to a one-year AHL deal and then release him to the NHL draft when he is eligible; sign him to a multi-year deal and then trades his rights to the NHL team that drafts him or; sign him to a three-year deal with the Marlies, have him ignore the team that drafts him in 2009 so he’ll be free to sign with Toronto as a UFA in 2011.

Tavares would likely receive more money to play in the AHL than NHL rookies receive under the current collective bargaining agreement.

A call to Tavares’s agent, Bryan Deasley was not returned. An email to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly was not returned, either.

Branch said he is not convinced this scheme by the Leafs will appeal to Tavares or his family. It is important to note that this move was initiated by the Maple Leafs and not the Tavares camp.

â€œI’m concerned about John in this instance because through stories like this he is starting to be characterized as this young person who wishes to advance himself at all costs and for whatever reasons,â€ Branch said. â€œI really don’t believe that is the case. I know when he came into our league I had a meeting with his family at which time they made it very clear to me they understood John was coming to play in the OHL for a minimum of four years.

â€œAs late as last week I met with John’s agent at the agent’s request and he wanted to clarify that all the stories that were circulating near the first part of September about (John) wanting to be part of this year’s NHL entry draft had not been initiated by John, his family or (his agents). He also expressed concerns about the characterization of John through that and wanted to reassure me there was no substance to the stories, they’re not pursuing it and they do not wish to pursue it. He said John will be fulfilling his responsibilities.â€

It has been widely reported Tavares’ people have approached the NHL to have the phenom made eligible for the 2008 draft. Tavares was born Sept. 20 and the cutoff date for the draft is Sept. 15, leaving him five days shy of being eligible.
