Flames fans are pissed at this writer. He should know better, they say on the discussion boards ... Kiprusoff is 'famous' for his slow starts, they say. That's the big excuse for playing like crap? A slow start? Or maybe he just wants out of Calgary and the Keenan empire?

    http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/752194.html

SHOCKER: Everyone in the hockey universe wondered how Calgary Flames star Kiprusoff, one of the game's most reliable goalies, would fare under the coaching of the unpredictable and inscrutable Mike Keenan.

    We have our answer.

    Not well.

Kiprusoff's goals-against average is a bloated 3.15, his save percentage a miserable .879 and Keenan already has hooked him once for rookie backup Curtis McElhinney.

If Kiprusoff (5-3-3) is (was?) the gold standard for Western Conference goaltending, his counterpart in the East, Martin Brodeur, is struggling as well under a new coach.

Brent Sutter has made some changes to the traditional Devils way of doing things -- defense no longer comes first, second and third -- and the losses of Brian Rafalski (free agent) and Colin White (eye) have ravaged New Jersey's defense.

    Brodeur's numbers are even worse than Kiprusoff's: 3.30, .876 and a 2-5-0 record.

It's "punishments" like these that make the public-at-large believe the NHL lets anything go.

It must be quite stupid of the Flames then to re-up with Kipper for the follow six years (starting after this year) for $35-million.
I think if it comes down to Kipper or Keenan, the Flames will side with Kipper, and after this contract, he should know that. Basically if Keenan is giving him trouble he can tell him to go blow it out his ass.

And in other news, Leafs lost to the Caps 7-1.

And they got booed off the ice.

About the only bright light in my hockey universe is Brampton. Tied for first in the OHL Eastern Conference.

And John Tavares is coming to town on Friday.

Lightning appear they are going to be Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde this season.

Good at home, bad on the road.

I don't know really what the story on laraque is this year, but when he was in Edmonton, Mac-T wouldn't let him on the ice because he didn't want him to fight. If that makes sense. He just wanted the presence but apparently didn't want him to drop the gloves. This is why the likes of Smith, Staios, Moreau, Torres, Greene, Winchester, and so on had far more fights than Laraque in Edmonton over his last couple of seasons there. I would be surprised if he dropped the gloves more than twice his final year in Edmonton.

And Damien Cox rips the Leafs a new one in today's column. Good stuff.

The body language and effort level of the Leafs suggested that the Caps were merely the lowly Caps while they, by virtue of their long waiting list for tickets, 22 per cent return on investment, high definition, Pravda-like TV network and majestic brand recognition, were clearly the superior entity and thus deserved the two points on the line.

I caught Lightning-Rangers. Blueshirts got back to screening goaltenders and shooting the puck.

After the game ended, I flipped over to catch the last 10 minutes of Caps-Leafs. Lots of empty seats at the ACC.

That deal is going to mean losing either Huselius or Lombardi next season.
