I had no idea there were no linesmen on the ice for warmups in the NHL (at least in the Leafs-Rangers game).

Junior teams aren't supposed to go out until the linesmen are on the ice but I've seen them do it on occasion when the liners are delayed etc. and I don't even think the kids notice there are no officials out there.

The NY and Toronto papers chronicling of Avery's evening in Toronto:

The Rangers scored twice within 42 seconds in the first period and the Maple Leafs scored twice within two minutes in the third in what was a vanilla and boring game with the exception of the antics between Sean Avery and Darcy Tucker during warm-ups and then in the first period.

Avery, who set up the Blueshirts' first goal with a neat feed to Shanahan and then scored the second from in front, sparred with Tucker after trash-talking during the pre-game skate. The two antagonists then drew unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in the first before engaging in a fight that Avery won by decision.

Tucker, who was pounded in a fight by Avery at the Garden last April 1, called the Ranger "classless" several times after the game. Glen Sather prohibited Avery, who celebrated his goal with gusto aimed at the Toronto bench, from addressing the press.

"Everybody knows about Sean's antics, fighting and his ability to get under peoples' skin, but every once in a while he reminds people that he can play," Shanahan said of Avery, who has scored in each of his last two games. "I'm not a big fan of the talking, I don't think it's necessary, but I know how important Sean is to our team."

TORONTO - Neither Sean Avery nor Steve Valiquette could wait for the puck to drop. Not surprisingly, they handled their anxieties in very different ways.

Avery instigated another near-brawl in the pregame warmup. Valiquette fought to remain calm while watching a parade of Hall of Famers step onto the ice, delaying his first start in eight months for another 20 minutes.

Avery, of course, has his own definition of how to carry out such a mandate. And for the second time in his five games back from a separated shoulder, he instigated a near-brawl in the warmup - this time by trash-talking fellow agitator Darcy Tucker to distraction.

"Just the usual Sean Avery stuff: letting everybody know that we're going to war," Avery told the Daily News afterward.

Tucker claimed that Avery crossed a line with some of the subject matter - "Let's just say it was classless," he said. That, the Toronto winger said, was why he went back at Avery, leading to them and scrappy Leafs winger Jason Blake engaging in some stick swats and shoves.

"He just kept yapping," Tucker said. "He just didn't stop. And there is nothing you can do about it. He gets right in your face."

Said Avery of Tucker's "classless" assessment: "I don't even know. I've had many people tell me that. That's not the first. And I'm sure it won't be the last."

Avery piled on the annoyance by being in the middle of both of the scoring plays the Rangers used to open a 2-0 lead. He set up Shanahan for a one-timer from in close 1:43 into the period. He then made a chaos-inducing hit along the boards to start an attack that ended with him popping in the rebound of a Dan Girardi shot 42 seconds later.

The middle of the game was all about forward Sean Avery, whose abrasive qualities, not to mention a goal and an assist, undid Toronto.

They were, however, much more annoyed at Avery, who started agitating when he got in a shouting match with Maple Leafs forward Darcy Tucker during warm-ups. The two traded shoves that drew them matching unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties in the first period, then ran into each other coming out of the penalty box and got into a fight.

Avery would not speak to reporters after the game, but Tucker called Avery â€œclassless.â€

Making matters worse for Toronto, Avery set up the Rangers’ first goal, making a backhand pass from behind the net to Shanahan in front, 1 minute 43 seconds into the second period. Then he scored their second goal 42 seconds later, when Shanahan batted the puck out of midair on a rebound, sending it right to Avery for the goal.

Shanahan and Sean Avery scored less than a minute apart on one particularly bad shift by the Toronto line of Matt Stajan, Alex Steen and Boyd Devereaux early in the second. Avery and Toronto’s Darcy Tucker got into a yapping/pushing match during the warmups. They didn’t drop the gloves but Tucker, who later described Avery as â€œclassless,â€ raised his stick menacingly toward the Rangers pest, rubbing it against his shoulder.

The league will likely review the incident with an eye toward potential fines. Later, in the first period, Tucker and Avery had an energetic scrap and then repeatedly chirped at each other as they sat in their respective penalty boxes.

â€œIt’s great to see Darcy playing with an edge like that,â€ said Sundin. â€œI thought it gave us some energy.â€

Good to see that Erik Cole apparently is OK. Given his severe neck injury two years ago, I was really worried when he didn't move for a while. He's been cleared to go with the team to Tampa so obviously it can't be as bad as I first feared.

Saw a piece on Mark Messier last night and he said that he was sad that Gretzky was the only one who was not there when the Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1990.

It was very touching to see Messier pay tribute to the Great One like that...

How idiotic is the NHL: You've got Ron Francis inducted into the Hall and the league has the Hurricanes playing on the same night and Scott Stevens is inducted and the league has the Devils playing on the same night. Hey, it's a Monday night. How hard is it to give the main team for all of the inductees the night off?

NHL looking into these allegations. Avery is denying that he said anything to Jason Blake that was "classless".
However, I personally think Tucker should choose his words carefully:

You know what goes around comes around in this game eventually

The last time something close to this quote was said, the Bertuzzi-Moore incident took place soon after.
