According to Campbell via AP, Downie can play in the AHL.

"Campbell said Downie would be available to play in the Flyers' minor league affiliate in the AHL.

"Downie has not played an NHL game with the Flyers and was expected to start the season in the minor leagues. The 20-year-old said after the game he thought it was a clean hit."

As an aside, and I know I'm a few days late, why on earth was Chris Simon allowed to play in a preseason game against the Rangers? Shouldn't the league be able to say, you're out for 25 regular-season games, and even though we don't count preseason games, you can't play against the Rangers, either?

 

That's a great question that no one seems to have an answer to.

 

Only the NHL thinks it's a good idea to have its cable broadcast partner air the second regular season game against the early NFL games.

I love hockey, but Sam Mills and I will be the only people watching Kings-Ducks Sunday afternoon.

Make that three. Actually, if the Carolina Panthers are playing, SM might be watching the football game.

 

Yeah, it's preseason, so it doesn't mean anything. But man, do the Rangers look good tonight. Rangers up 4-1 in the third over the AHL Islanders.

 

The Canes, not much of a fighting team, have four fighting majors halfway through the third period against Columbus.

 

Good way to develop a sense of unity throughout the team. Rangers have had a couple scraps tonight against the Isles, who made a point of running Ryan Hollweg tonight. And every time, the Blueshirts stood up for No. 44.
