Most likely. VCU should get a home game in the NIT and maybe a second-round game with Va. Tech.

Eight guys on the floor, and Rams still couldn't win -- and I thought they had a helluva shot, going in.

I was listening to someone yapping on the radio yesterday and they made a good point about my boys at Mason.....They really don't have all that impressive a resume.

Best Non-Conference wins: Harvard (35 RPI, on Nov. 13) and Duquesne (95). Those are Mason's only NC wins against top 100 RPI teams.
Worst losses: NC State (118) and Wofford (116).

Sure, they split with ODU and VCU, but that's nothing special considering they're CAA rivals. The only real difference between Mason and ODU is that Mason doesn't have a bad CAA loss on its resume. ODU lost at Delaware.

ODU's resume looks WAY better than Mason's with wins against Xavier (21), Cleveland St. (41), and Clemson (57). And they lost by three at Georgetown (11).

How the hell is Mason's RPI in the 20s?

I'm going straight to hell for even bringing this up.

Ineresting point. ODU has better wins -- they also beat Richmond (55) and St. Peter (101 and in the tourney) -- and their losses were generally to respectable teams (except for Delaware). But they also played some real tomato cans in there too (Maryland-Eastern Shore, High Point).

Mason lost few games and no truly stinkers, and the CAA was up (three teams in the top 50 RPI), so that helped.

I said the same thing about them the year they went to the Final Four - they should not have even been in the tournament, Hofstra should have been.

When I covered Northern Arizona back in the day, I was out at Stockmen's in Missoula the night before an NAU-Montana game and Pat Kennedy was in there at 1 a.m. slamming shots of tequila with his grad assistants. Kind of showed Kennedy's dedication to the job...

HAHAHAHA. Someone's head just exploded. Guess who?

Also, I'm not saying Mason shouldn't be in. Just that I never really took the time to really examine the resume. While it's not great by any stretch, it's good enough, especially this year when there are no great teams and a TON of "Meh. OK" teams.

Expect blood in the desert when the CUSA Tournament goes off at UTEP. Seeing as how UCF is the 9-seed, that makes nine teams that are capable of winning the thing.

UAB, with a strong finish to win the regular season title, is probably a decent bet for an at-large, as long as they don't go belly up in their first game in El Paso (which is entirely possible as they play the winner of ECU-UCF; no gimme, that).

If Memphis doesn't win the tournament, they'll be sweating bullets right up to the selection show, because they didn't exactly look like an NCAA Tournament team down the stretch.

The rest of the contenders (Tulsa, UTEP, USM, Marshall, SMU) will need to win the tournament to get in the Show, and will all probably need to win at least two games to get in the NIT.

And there's your Coosa update for this week (LOL).

Albert, I think an under-the-radar story has been the slow rebirth of C-USA. It's under the radar because it lacks the signature team (where are you Memphis?) but where it was Memphis and a bunch of nobodies in recent years, there are now several pretty good college basketball teams in that league.
