So awesome. I've never been so happy to have my national champ out in the first weekend.

First Valley team to beat a No. 1 since Cincinnati knocked off Ohio State in 62.

First Valley team in the Sweet 16 since Indiana State in 79.

So far, in the Sweet 16, we have UNI (Missouri Valley), Butler (Horizon) and St. Mary's (West Coast Conference).

Soon to be joined by Washington, from the left-for-dead Pac-10.

Watching at home next week: UConn, North Carolina, Villanova, Georgetown, Kansas and Steve "Big Game, Big Flameout" Alford.

This has been a great, great tournament so far!

You are now aware that Washington, the 11 seed, is not a mid-major.

You are also aware that nobody has EVER sad that mid-majors don't deserve tourney bids.

I swear, this place would have made me cheer for Goliath because they'd make David look like a whiny asshole.

The entire state of Iowa is about to party like it's 1999. The good guys win and Wonder Boy gags to UW.

    Fucking epic and beautiful!

It's a good thing the BCS hasn't got its hands on the basketball tournament. Northern Iowa wouldn't have been allowed in the building!

Where does this rank among all-time tournament upsets?

Kinda like how Boise State and TCU didn't play in a BCS bowl this year?

  9. Yeah, at the kiddie table.

Probably not THAT high, though everyone loved Kansas. Northern Iowa was underseeded at 9. You figure all the 15 vs. 2 wins are bigger. Probably some 14 vs. 3 wins too. Kansas going out in the first weekend is huge news, of course, but I don't know that Ohio-Georgetown wasn't an actual bigger upset, since Ohio wasn't even .500 in a perennially one-bid conference and the Hoyas had national title talent when they didn't play like fail. And 'Nova over Georgetown.

He's a rookie SID too, though he's a good one.

Incredible. I saw UNI plenty of times this year, but I didn't think this was possible. Feel the Missouri Valley Conference.

Incidentally, CBS had some MASSIVE factual fail when they said Indiana State was the last MVC Sweet 16 team in '79. In the 00s alone, Southern Illinois (twice), Bradley and Wichita State made it that far.

Didn't realize a BCS game was the kiddie table.

Oh, that's right, I keep forgetting that the only acceptable way to do playoffs is to go out of your way to make matchups favorable to mid-major supporters. You're pissed TCU-Boise happened, take it up with the Fiesta for choosing Boise instead of shitty, no-fan-having Cincinnati, or the Orange for not taking either.

But it's a hell of a lot more fun to bitch about conspiracies against mid-majors. Less accurate, but more fun.
