    Worst example, ever, Rube.

The basketball team is floundering because of those illegal booster payments that led to Fischer leaving, self-imposed probation, NCAA sanctions, loss of scholarships, Brian Ellerbee and Tommy Amaker having to clean up Ellerbee's mess. Meanwhile, with MSU was able to take over recruiting in Michigan.

The football team has had two bad seasons. That athletic budget hasn't changed much since 2006 when they were No.2 in the nation.

Which is a damn shame because they have arguably the best arena to watch a college basketball game and have been the best team in the state over the past few years (yes, I'm including this year's Purdue team in that).

I won't disagree there, obviously that program has had issues due to crippling violations.
Just trying to grab a team off the top of my head with a giant budget. I guess I should've used Virginia first.

Even so, I don't think I'd say Michigan getting sanctioned is the reason why Tom Izzo built a powerhouse.

On top of that, remember Kentucky had a similar situation in the late 80s early 90s.
They hired Rick Pitino – not Brian Ellerbee. No one held a gun to anyone's head on that one.

Xavier starting to make a game of it. I'm guessing they hang tough for a while, but KSU wins by 10-15.

A guy in an active seizure can draw a charge in today's NCAA.

Can you imagine the hell they are catching at the CBS affilite in Cincinnati? They have to show Xavier, thereby inciting all of Northern Kentucky to cross the bridge with torches and pitchforks in hand.

Are they showing Xavier? I could totally see them opting for UK over Xavier. Either way, they catch hell.

    ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Michigan had Mateen Cleaves on a recruiting trip when Robert Traylor, who was taking money from Ed Martin, crashed his SUV, also a gift from a booster. Cleaves was in the car.

Shortly after he committed to MSU. That was just the beginning. Since then Izzo has dominated recruiting, meanwhile Ellerbee let the program spiral out of control. Amaker cleaned it up a bit, but by the time Ellerbee had been canned it was too late. Meanwhile, the scholarship limits and tournament ban was in effect. That didn't help either.

The only huge in-state recruit Michigan has gotten since then is Manny Harris --- meanwhile Izzo grabbed Lucas, Roe and Summers. Izzo capitalized on his opportunity.
