I meant the rules official who was no longer on the course was done for the day.

This was not a replay situation. This was a horseshit call by someone who was not even on the golf course at the time.
    Dustin Johnson get screwed

I learned something else yesterday. I always thought that golf pencils didn't have erasers.

Only the ones at the local mini-golf place don't have erasers

I wish I remember exactly what the TVs said, but after Johnson hit the ball up there someone made a comment that he had caught a break and landed on a flat area that the gallery had trampled down, going so far as to say the lie was good and he had a good place to stand.

It really depends on the course and whether they're willing to spend a little extra money. I've been at cheaper courses that have erasers, but I've also been at more expensive courses that don't have them.

Blatantly? When no one even realized he was in a sand trap?
    Total bullshit.

Golfers also call penalties on themselves a lot too, even in major tournaments.

There have been stories of viewers at home somehow calling someone at the course and bringing up a ruling that leads to a penalty. That's very shaky to me. But an official watching on a monitor at the course? Got no problem with that. The official isn't looking to screw one guy, per se, his job is to protect the field. You think Dustin got screwed, but as has been said here, what if he had won the tournament while breaking a rule?

And I love that a person from home can correct the play.

This has happened a handful of times over the years.

Watched some of the Golf Channel coverage today -- there is no way that he didn't know he was hitting out of a bunker. Feherty is being disingenuous there. Good job by John Feinstein showing the tape of Rocco getting proactive help from a rules official telling Rocco not to touch his ball in the 2008 US Open playoff.

Don't forget that Whistling Straits is also hosting the 2020 Ryder Cup, so maybe there's a bunker out there that can cause an international incident!

As an aside, why in the hell have they set the locations for the Ryder Cup so damned far in advance?

Webster ... when they showed the replay for about the 30th time Sunday, I noticed that Dustin grounded his club and then kind of picked it up and looked around quizzically, like he knew he might have goofed up. Then he went back and hit the shot.
