It's a great two-way win for Cal . . . he can keep bringing in the crops of high-profile kids, and when they blow up, he can say, "Hey, they're young".

He gets paid for this. I swear to God.

It's not like he's a bad coach. He's obviously a good one. But if Kentucky's expecting Rupp-calibre success, it ain't happening . . . if for no other reason than the prevailing level of competition is so much stronger than it was sixty years ago.

Wait a minute - he has been in Lexington for what, this is his third season? - and they've been to a Final Four an Elite Eight in his first two years and have won the SEC title both years and have won about 70 or 75 percent of the their games?

    What is Rupp-calibre success exactly?

The team is playing in huge games, has NBA draft picks running around and is relevant again - I think Cal is doing exactly what he was hired to do.

Win national championships. That's the standard. And if Joe B. Hall and Tubby could each bag one, Cal should be able to do likewise.

Cal will win one or two national titles - and once he does, there will be nothing left for his legion of critics to nitpick about.

I say it again - he has had exactly one year where he has had the best team - and he was a miracle 3-pointer away from winning a national title.

This isn't 1960 any more - a lot of teams are really, really good and really capable of winning national titles - so the idea of a dynasty ever happening again is not realistic.

If Cal continues to put people in the NBA, get Kentucky deep into the tournament, dominate the SEC and yes, he has to win one or two national titles, I'm not sure how anyone could argue with that.

I look at Cal and Tarkanian as very similar coaches with a possibility of having very similar career numbers when it is all said and done.

There are two main reasons why this national title could go off the rails for Cal: 1. Ohio State getting through its issues and 2. North Carolina getting through its issues. If those teams are clicking in March, they'll be right there with UK.

Edited in the interest of accuracy, Zagoshe. Hope you don't mind.

    Thank you.

. . . despite the fact that arguably, Cal understands the day-to-day reporter's task better than just about anyone, and man, can he frame a quote.

Yup. He'll be vacating national titles. Think the NCAA wasn't breathing a sigh of relief when Mario Chalmers hit the 3 to get Memphis-Kansas into OT?

Cal is good with the media ... S-P told us of one chance phone call where he left a message and Cal returned it himself. More a fit for the NBA ... except for calling someone a "f_cking Mexican idiot." Not his best moment ...

I doubt he will and here is why - the only reason the NCAA was making an example of him was because he was at Memphis and UMass - two schools that you aren't supposed to win big at.

If he wins at Kentucky it will be overlooked

Eddie Sutton just chuckled and he's not sure why.

Wasn't Eddie Sutton the one who was actually caught sending money through Fed Ex to Kemp?

There hasn't ever been anything close to that kind of smoking gun in Cal's hands at any of his stops. Not close.
