We had a guy there to do something on Harper and he said the same thing about Wang. Said he looked like the Wang of old. Be a nice bonus for the Nats if they get anything out of him.

I love, love, LOVE that at least a couple of n.y.-area columnists (including my boy politi) ripped the yankees, not the d-rays, for costing jeter a game this weekend. it ain't up to the opposition to look out for the pinstripes or their captain's best interests, it's up to them. when cashman shrugs and says, 'it's business,' to explain why the yanks didn't just reschedule a straight doubleheader today or tomorrow. heaven forbid they lose a full-house gate!!

yankee bashers are absolutely right to revel in this chapter. awful job by steinbrenners. and if jeter gets only one hit today and tomorrow, the backlash will really hit a--holes like randy levine in the fanny, 'cause EVERYONE will be jumpin' on the bandwagon, ripping the yanks for not playing two.

The Yankees had sold 48,000 seats for last night's game.

Show me one team in baseball who would willingly give up that gate. With their average ticket price of around $70.00, you're talking about $3.4M in ticket revenue alone.

Because of the FOX exclusive window, the second game of the double header would also not be allowed to be televised. Further lost revenue. And, how much of a screw job would that be to the fans if Jeter got his 3,000th hit in a game that was blacked out?

They also screwed over the fans who actually had tickets for the game.

Finally, the Rays did agree to a slit double header in either August or September, before settling on an off day in September for the make up date. So, the concern was not the split nature of the double header.

This was a petty act by a petty organization.

gotta love michael kay's spin on the 'doubleheader hubbub' during jeter 3000k weekend: just explained tampa bay was within their rights to decline going the day-night route, wondering aloud why they'd rather do a day/nighter in aug, or sept. when a-rod, swisher amd mariano are hurting/out now. 'makes no sense' that rays refused. at least john flaherty chimed in that tampa is banged up, too.

kay then acknowledged yanks could have unilaterally decided to go the straight doubleheader route but opted not to 'in fairness to the fans who'd bought tix but were rained out of a shot at seeing 3,000. WTF??!! the rained-out ticket-holders are screwed out of seeing 3,000 regardless. today's crowd would've fallen into great fortune, getting 8 or 9 jeter at-bats, but them thar's the breaks.

NEVER did kay say a word about a day-highter means TWO sellout gates, while a pure doubleheader means just one. we ALL know this is why straight doubleheaders are no longer scheduled and are played only in rainout emergencies. heaven forbid the pintstripes willfully forfeit a gate.

michael kay -- yet another once hard-hitting scribe who has sold his soul to the team that pays him.

It's not like the Yankees are the only team in baseball who would want to preserve a 48,000 gate.

How often are straight double headers played anywhere? And, for most teams, it doesn't mean giving up 48,000 seats worth of revenue.

I get that people hate the Yankees, but the Rays were totally petty about the whole thing -- as usual.

And trust me, the Yankees management is furious about this. Randy Levine in particular, has to be just pissed. And, knowing Randy, he will not forget it and will do everything in his power to fuck over the Rays in return.

But YF, the Yankees are the one team that consistently does not (and doesn't need to) worry about money. Show me one team that even comes within $25M of them in payroll. The impact of not having the game on TV is worthy of discussion -- I think Fox would have been willing to grant a waiver but we will never know. However, the sudden concern over the lost gate runs counter to every way the Yankees have operated for the past decade. Hell, $3.4 million? They're overpaying Jeter by more than that for each of the next three years.

So the Rays, who are going to need every win they can in what's shaping up as a tight pennant race, are supposed to sacrifice a game so another player can get a nice ceremony? Sorry, don't see the logic in that. There is pettiness, all right -- but it's coming from the Yankees. Par for the course though from the same organization that overspent on Pedro Feliciano and then blamed the Mets.

Coming to bat looking for 3,000 right now.

The Yankees can spend precisely because they rake in the revenue. You don't fuck with the revenue.

And, I doubt FOX would have granted a waiver. They would have lost the biggest market in the country, and if Jeter was going for 3,000, who in New York or Tampa Bay would be watching FOX?

Hits an HR for number 3,000.

    Boggs did it as well.

    Fuck you Tampa bay.

Perfect. Two at bats, two hits.

Hey, maybe now Tampa Bay will agree to play the second game tonight.
