Look at the mitt in this picture. It's bent in from contact with the runner's leg.

I think it's safe to say that literally every single person watching, whether at the stadium or on TV, knew he was out.

Does the replay allow for a .00001 percent chance that perhaps, just maybe, possibly, he missed the tag? Sure. And you could say the same about a thousand other calls every night. It's overthinking it to call it anything other than an out.

I love how everyone is looking at his glove and milimeters of space between glove and leg, but you need two yardsticks to measure the guys foot to the plate in the picture.

This is pretty much we're I'm at on it. Especially in a game like that, there's no way it should end in that manner.

no, you really don't. now, if the team site kept it off it would be stupid but i'd understand.

mlb? they'd be CRUCIFIED if they tried to ignore it, given how it IMMEDIATELY became the most shown and seen play probably since posey was hurt. mlb has to take their lumps like big boys and go with the, 'well, at least folks are talking about us -- AND THE PIRATES!'

there are bad calls. and there are INCREDIBLY bad calls. to have a freakin' 19-inning game end in such fashion is really mind-boggling.

those who knee-jerked into making it out to be the worst call EVER must be 12 or under, i'd have to guess.

but there are very few games that end with decided by an ump's safe/out call determining the winner. that might be fairly new. we all know how many games are decided by 'walk-off' homers or hits or anything else that doesn't require any real 'call' at all.

but the final play a bang-banger at the plate with the call determining whether the game's over or will go on? not so much. all i can opine is that this ump has to have a HUGE set of balls to call, 'SAFE!,' game over. without replay, if i was the home-plate ump in that situation i know beforehand that if there is any play at the plate that could go either way i'm erring on the side of caution and making the call that keeps the game going. at least then it's still up to the players to carry on until there's a no-doubt-about-it run scored.

but i guess that why these guys get paid the big bucks.

the ump is at third base tonight, right in front of pittsburgh's dugout. does hurdle get tossed as the lineup cards are exchanged? or do any number of pirates coaches get tossed during the game for hounding him?

Guess I'm knee-jerking now, because I can't recall anything blatantly worse. YouTube video, please?

The Jeter/Jeffrey Maier "home run," for one.

How Hurdle handles this will be very interesting.

He has a young team, and I guess he will decide this afternoon as to the mood of his clubhouse and to how to react. But if his players are moping and the wind out of their sails, if I were him, I would give a pregame speech telling them how much I though last night was pure shit and after the first pitch I am going to get thrown out of the game standing up for them. Then I would wait until the first pitch was thrown, walk out of the dugout straight to thrid base and blast him.

deckinger. maier. that's right off the top of my noggin. and both of those were POST-SEASON games. i'm sure there are others in the post-season, too.

and there have surely been worse calls hundreds of times in regular-season history. just now such 'atrocities' are seen with more immediacy and FAR more many outlets with a variety of angles. so let's keep our declarations of 'THE WORST EVER!' under a bit on control.

even here, it took several replays at slo-mo to make it anywhere close to 'conclusive.' heck, i'm not among them, but some are taking the tact that there is no replay here that offers indisputable evidence a tag was made.

now, the throw beat him by the proverbial 'country mile.' but the catcher did 'ole' it'. perhaps as a reaction to posey. but he played it like a second baseman or shortstop, where 'phantom' tags are accepted all the time. but at the plate, where rubs are decided, everyone feels better is they see the tag. not presume the tag.

unfortunately, even with replay, some presuming was required.

It was pretty darn conclusive on live look, and remained that way on every instant replay.
