Especially not for a guy like Pence.

Ya, that does go too far. I have my list of umpires I'd like to see punished for making bad calls, but family, friends and kids are off limits. I prefer baseball over football, but one thing NFL gets right is Goodell's ability to discipline officials. We'll probably need a new commissioner to do that in MLB.

Giants are looking real good with that Beltran deal. I still think Ivan Rodriguez is on their radar too, and they have some second-tier position prospects who could make that work. (If I'm the Nats, I ask for Emmanuel Burriss -- good fielder, poor hitter now who has had some success previously, tremendous local story as the first major leaguer since Maury Wills to come from the D.C. public schools.)

Really, though, other than third and first base they can take a hard look at everyone and not have to worry how it's going to affect their lineup. I guess that's the good part of sucking as hitters.

Except Pudge is out with an oblique injury and may be out for a while.

Ah, I did not know that. Well, shit. (Although his .214 average and 2 HRs should perhaps mean he isn't much of answer after all.)

    A retarded move.

This is how teams fuck themselves. They don't need a thing. They just need to hit in the playoffs.

The sad thing is the Nats actually MISS him.
Still a very, very good defensive catcher. Calls a good game, can throw. Just can't hit anymore.
I would suspect, if he wants, he can find a job coaching or maybe managing. The people here swear by him as a teammate, mentor, etc.

Another near-epic performance for the Angels. The day after Ervin Santana's no-hitter, Mark Trumbo just missed hitting for the cycle. In order: homer, triple, popout, double, groundout to shortstop in the ninth inning. He got 5 RBIs in a 12-7 victory at Detroit.

Another interesting thing happened in this game. Tigers starter Brad Penny and catcher Victor Martinez got into a heated argument between the mound and plate in the fourth inning. Went on for a couple of minutes. They were yelling and pointing at each other. Leyland had already been thrown out of the game and it took awhile for the pitching coach to get out there and settle things down. Even Angels announcer Mark Gubicza, a former pitcher, blasted Penny: "He missed the target by about 5 feet. How is that the catcher's fault."

Still trying to figure out how Kyle Davies and Luke Hochevar stymied the Sox, especially at Fenway. No matter. Splitting that series is an A-plus performance for KC's shoddy staff.

Leyland gets run about twice a week, it seems. Is he laying off the heaters or something?

This is a kid with an omnipresent stage parent.

He probably told him the president sucks.
