People act like this is the first time someone has ever sat on a lead in batting average on the last day of the year. Yawn. BFD.

Since we're on page 168, I'm guessing you're in the middle of the SkiptomyLou portion of the thread.

Different situation, but Jeter went in to today's game batting .298 (and struck out to start the game).

Ken Singleton, calling the game for YES, said he was in the same situation one year. he needed to go 1 for 2 to get to .300. He said he got a bunt single and, before he reached first base, there was a pinch runner waiting there for him.

He said his manager (Weaver?) had told he would do it and that he had no choice in the manner.

Reggie Jackson was also pulled after an AB in the 1980 finale to preserve his .300 average. Again, who fuckin cares? You've got 162 games to pad your stats. You want to leave after an AB to end on a nice round number or win a batting title, good for you.

For Brewers fans, the NL batting title chase is shades of 1982.

Willie Wilson and Robin Yount were locked in a battle for the title back then. Wilson sat out the last game of the season to protect his .332 average. Yount (.328 going into the last day) nearly caught him anyway as he lit up the Orioles with 4-for-5 day that clinched the division for the Brewers.

I remember that. Only time he ever hit .300, I think.

Wasn't Yount HBP in his final at bat?

Teixeira grand slam on a 3-2 count with two outs in the 2nd.

    5-0 Yankees.

Yankees starter looked awfully shaky in the 1st. Not over yet.
