In The Bronx Zoo Lyle tells a story about the Mayor's Trophy Game -- an exhibition game that used to be played on an early off day between the Yankees & the Mets.

    The veterans hated the game.

Some rookie makes a great play to save the game, and the veterans are pissed. They want to get out of there.

So, when Nettles gets a ground ball, he sails it way over the head of the first baseman.

Yanks lose. Steinbrenner is pissed -- it's an exhibition, but Steinbrenner wants to beat the Mets.

But, the Yankees don't miss their dinner reservations.

Hmm. Unless the Yankees just really enjoy being in Tampa Bay, it seems like they probably should have finished the job and let them score two runs. Getting the third out seems kind of odd, given that they are throwing the game.

Least upset I've ever been by a potential loss. (Ties the other night.)

But, I hate the Rays too, so I'm a little conflicted.

Great point earlier, YankeeFan, about these games being on a Wednesday night.

We'll be able to give them better play in the paper ... and, it's a slower night, so we can watch a little more, too.

    Rays for sure.

And I think it's the Cardinals.

Michael Kay giving Girardi some shit for "getting cute" with his pitching while he had a big lead.

You're right. Was picturing the Cardinals sitting in the visitors clubhouse waiting to find out whether they needed to fly home or to Atlanta.
