Howard had better pray he never gets put in the middle of a mediocre lineup, because without getting all the extra RBI opportunities to inflate his total, he's going to be exposed for the merely pretty good slugger that he is.

It kicked in the second that game ended, right?

He very well might not play next year.

They would have been allowed to insert a pinch-runner. Saw it happen in a spring-training game four years ago. A White Sox player popped a calf muscle on the home run trot and went down between first and second. Another player was inserted and completed the run.

Horrible deal at the time, and it just looks even worse now. Prince Fielder's agent would be worried if major league GMs and owners weren't so stupid on the whole. I mean, they're not NBA-stupid, but they're close.

I'm pretty sure we don't have the same four teams in a seven-game series. Love the five-game series.

I was driving for a work trip during the Brewers game. I am still in an otherworldly high right now. Unbelievable!

Baseball always provides an interesting answer.

This guy actually scored the first run of his career in just such a situation:

Yeah, so I cried when the Brewers won. We have sucked so hard for so long.

Wouldn't he have had to touch first base on his own, though? If he doesn't get to first, he's not technically on base yet and therefore you can't pinch-run for him, right?
In that situation, though, I'm sure they'd be willing to wait for him to crawl the 90 feet if need be.

The crazier part would have been, what if that ball had squeezed out to right field or Punto had booted it? (I know, that last part is sacrilege.) It wasn't that far from finding a hole. How insane would that have been for the series to end because he couldn't run to first?

Well, LaRussa's team does know the unwritten rules better than anybody else.

Is there a finer tribute to a pitcher than being allowed to throw a complete game by Tony La Russa?
