My fanboi rationalization is kicking in and saying he won't have the money to blow on free agents this time around. I just want him to build the scouting and development department from the ground up.

The money earned per outs was supposed to be inexact, yet also some indication of how overpaid and underused he is for that salary.

The roster was that unsettled until the night they were mercifully relieved of their burdens, and the guy is making that kind of coin to pitch 64 1/3 innings. And then when they /really/ need him, he gets beat by Robert Andino.

Sorry to break it to you, but somebody was going to have to handle that role. If Papelbon was gone, Boston's "cheap" option was Daniel Bard, the guy who completely fell apart late in the season. But yeah, they would have been just fine with him closing all year. :
