Yeah, no reason for any team to be proud of winning a World Series. Never a statistically significant sample.

Does anyone else think this win puts LaRussa over the top as greatest manager of all time? Sure, you can point out screw-ups like the bullpen phone fiasco but eventually all we're going to remember is his record, and it's pretty amazing. Thirty-three years and counting as a manager (most of the managers from 1979, when TLR started, are now dead) and three championships.

Comparing him to the best managers of the last 40 years I think he comes out on top:

Torre - great with the Yankees but mediocre with other teams

Cox - only won it all once

Weaver - managerial career only half as long as LaRussa, and just one win (I think the only reason Weaver's not considered the Cox of his era is because the O's won it all just before - '66 - and just after - '83 his tenure as manager)

Sparky Anderson - won it three times also but didn't have the longevity, and probably should have won more than twice with the Big Red Machine

Who needs video? Just replace the Cards logo in this pic with LaRussa's balls and welcome to my nightmare.

La Russa never managed Jeter, and thus can never be considered the greatest.

C'mon I'm trying to ask a serious question.

If you want to talk to me about the Captain we have a thread for that :)

Some of the dumbest thinking there is. How the hell in baseball do you want it more?

If Cruz makes a fairly routine catching in game 6 are you saying this.
    Nothing better than BS cliches.

I actually think his longevity kind of hurts, in that I've thought of him as the manager's version of the 1990s Atlanta Braves. Three in 33 years just seems OK to me, since at various points he has had teams with Canseco and McGwire and Eck, and McGwire with the Cards, and then Pujols the past X years. The fact that other contemporaries don't really have better records suggests to me how fungible managers are. (Well, that and that Girardi and Bruce Bochy have titles as well.)

I agree with your overall point, but that was not a routine catch. Definitely one he could have made, but it wasn't that easy.
