The NCAA sanctions came down long before Thomas decommitted from USC. USC went on probation in June of 2010 and Thomas was a firm USC commit until late January, 2011, when he made a last-minute recruiting trip to Oregon that he has already spoken to NCAA investigators about.

And ironically, the team he now plays for is under investigation for major recruiting viloations.

So about that belief that Okie State is more deserving of a spot in the title game than Alabama...

  3. On Wisconsin-Oregon: The problem wasn't when the clock started. The problem was the referee, who is behind the offense, signaled for the clock to run before blowing his whistle.

The clock starts on the signal, but the offense can't snap the ball until the whistle is blown because of the referee's positioning. It cost Wisconsin at least a tenth of a second, though I'm not sure if it was more or less than the time between the clock hitting 0:00 and the ball hitting the ground.

Wonder how long it will be before football game clocks count down tenths of seconds in the last minute of each half like they do for basketball.

There will be plenty of time to sleep when Bama and LSU trade field goals. :)

The little girl with lymphoma looked like she just lost her squares for the second quarter.

There are many defensive plays that are spectacular to watch, and Butkus and Lawrence Taylor are probably the pro football players who gave me the most entertaining moments. But I won't feel a bit guilty about wanting to see a well-run offense purring along and getting a lot of points in spectacular ways. And if such a game has key goal-line stands, I won't mind it at all. But I'm sorry, puntfests loaded with basically solid, unspectacular defense hold little appeal to me.

No love for the Stanford band at halftime?

OSU's Blackmon sure would look good in a Chicago Bears uni.

And this game sure would look great as a national semifinal, with the winner getting the LSU-Bama winner.

Except LSU would play Stanford and Bama would play OSU in the semifinals. And no way in hell do the Trees or OSU win on the road.

This has been a sharp, well-played game. No complaints from this couch.

(As Stanford derps it away deep.)
