PFT speculates that friction over the future of Manning may have played a role in the decision:

One would assume it would be Manning's future or Caldwell's future.

As far as Sherman goes, he's not an asshole, but he has a ridiculously inflated idea of his abilities as a coach. He took over a team that just about any coach in the league could have won with, and he did just that.

He was horrible in the playoffs and allowed Favre to do whatever he wanted, which played a huge role in Favre becoming the diva that he was at the end of his career.

It will be pretty funny if some team hires him and there's every indication that some team will. When has a coach been fired at a college and then wound up with a NFL head coaching gig?

Seen over ever Indiana media outlet that covered the Polian-era Colts in the wake of his and his son's demise.

Undeniably, one of the greatest NFL GM's (though not recently, see Colts drafts of recent ilk), but what an epic dickbag he was.

Caldwell's future will be decided by Manning and Co. Andrew Luck is in play.

Indy is going to be fun as hell to watch in the next couple months... One would certainly think that this move bodes well for Manning to return wouldn't you say?

Sherman would probably be fine if he was a just a coach, he's a very good X-and-O/game coach. Probably the best coaching job I've seen in the NFL is when he dragged a completely beat-up Packers team into Foxborough in 2002 and beat the Patriots.

But if he is ever given a general manager job again, or really, any power over personnel other than cutting someone in training camp, someone ought to have their head examined.

Caldwell has to be gone. There's a 5 p.m. EST presser.

And who in his right mind is going to hire Chris Polian? At least the old man has achieved something.

    Bill Polian.

If we can get through the rest of the coaching carousel season without anyone pretending that Rob Ryan should be an NFL coach, I'll be a happy man.

As a Cowboys fan, and I don't think a reactionary one, I would love to see them cut their losses & go hard after Spagnuolo.
