Bill Polian is headed to the Hall of Fame.
Name another current GM or exec with Polian's resume.

Who would be more insane - Saban to leave or any NFL franchise for hiring him?

Chris Polian didn't draft anyone. He was the least qualified general manager in any of the major sports.

Jim Irsay knows all about corporate nepotism, coasting on someone else's fortune and the lucky sperm club, so naturally he saw nothing wrong with it.

I'm not going to lie and tell you that all of the negatives in the sentence did not make it hard to read.

Bill Polian? Epic dickhead though he was, his football accomplishments speak for themselves.

CHRIS POLIAN? Are you fucking serious?

He sucked as a GM, but as an owner, Jim Irsay is about 1,000 times better than his dad. I know that's damning with faint praise, etc.

Chris Polain served in many different roles in the Colts football operations.
This was not a dynastic team, but it is an historically memorable one. He had a hand in the run.

I know he had a drug addiction, but Irsay always looks lit. I watched that entire presser and he looked like he'd been drinking since noon.

Bob Irsay was before my time, but all stories are that he was one of the all-time fuckwads.

    One from the time machine.

Yes he did ... their shitty drafts of the last few years.

C'mon, are you serious? Chris Fucking Polian? He is a walking talking advertisement for the dangers of nepotism.

Interesting to note that in the presser, Irsay spoke glowingly of Bill Polian. Didn't address Chris at all.

Leads me to believe Bill was asked to let go of Chris -- who hasn't really been impressive as a GM -- and refused.

Bob Kravitz had a scathing column a few weeks back that quoted several people with not very kind words about Chris Polian. And it's of note that the Colts have swung & missed at the top of the draft several times in the last half-decade, after years of pretty good drafts -- both at the top and deep in the draft.

However, it is interesting how the Colts' fortunes have changed significantly since Bob Irsay passed away and Jim took over ownership of the club. Immediately hired Bill Tobin, who put together a team that came a dropped interception away from the Super Bowl, and then replaced him with Polian & Mora -- and later Dungy -- a pairing that yielded a decade's worth of playoff appearances, division titles, two Super Bowl appearances and a title. Also ws able to get Lucas Oil Stadium built and lure a Super Bowl to a cold-weather city. While I've heard very little good about his dad -- from either of the two cities in which he operated -- Jim Irsay's track record has been pretty solid as an owner.

Irsay's track record is to hire established football people -- Tobin, Polian -- to run the operations. He's also done the same with his coaches -- Lindy Infante, Jim Mora, Tony Dungy. The recent promotions from within of Chris Polian & Jim Caldwell are a bit out of character, and Irsay didn't show a lot of patience here (didn't with Lindy Infante, another internal promotion as he was Ted Marchibroda's OC, either). It'll be interesting to see which direction he goes with this hire.

Crimsonace -- I think you're right on regarding the issue being Chris. Irsay noted in his presser that Bill was edging toward retirement. I presume Irsay, at the least, let Bill know that they were not going to fuck up the biggest opportunity ever to set themselves up for the next 10 years by letting Chris run the show. What all these people who are so "shocked" don't realize is that Chris is the, um, brains that are the issue. It doesn't help that Bill is a fucking asshole of a personality, which doesn't play well when you lose, or you're trying to make the case to have your idiot son run things after your retirement.

The only reason I can imagine that Irsay didn't fire Caldwell is that he's a nice guy whom Irsay might give some ceremonial position if he doesn't stay as coach. Caldwell ain't Lombardi, but the issues this year were far more about personnel than coaching (except for the much-deserved firing of DC Larry Coyer and his don't-touch-anyone-for-10-yards schemes).
