I'm sure a lot of franchises would love to hire Bill Polian. However, I'm also sure, despite what has been presented here by 3OctaveFart, that many would not want Chris along with him in a major decision-making capacity. Anyway, Irsay said during his presser that Polian was easing his way to retirement, so I don't know that Bill himself wants another job.

I don't like firing Angelo and I'm glad Smith is staying. Neither is elite, but the problem is an elite replacement isn't walking through that door.

When you fire an average GM or coach in the NFL, you are probably getting someone worse as a retread replacement.

I completely agree with this. I think teams are beginning to realize this and this is why we haven't had nearly as many firings as we have in years past.

I think it's the biggest reason why Norv Turner is likely to keep his job in San Diego.

How many re-treads have had success? Belichick and Dungy come to mind, although Dungy barely qualified as a re-tread since he was on the coaching market for eight days or something like that after he was fired. Schottenheimer?

There doesn't seem to be a hotshot assistant out there like Sean Payton or Mike Smith or Mike McCarthy. Most of the assistants who you hear about this year are former head coaches who are trying to get their second chance.

1969 -- Hired Chuck Noll after an unsuccessful attempt in trying to lure Joe Paterno.
1991 -- Hired Bill Cowher to replace Noll.
2007 -- Hired Mike Tomlin to replace Cowher.

Amazing when you consider Chris Long will enter his fifth season with the Rams next season -- with his fourth different head coach.

I don't think people even begin to realize how difficult it is to keep a head coaching job for 10 years in the NFL.

My point was simply that he has filled a lot of positions in an NFL front office.
His father got him in the door, but other teams have wanted to interview him.
This is a league that recycled a dinosaur like Charlie Casserly, who then proceeded to set his new team back a few years.
I think there is room for a young guy who has been groomed for years by a Hall of Fame executive talent.

I think the examples most would want to follow would be Thompson in Green Bay (who was groomed by Ron Wolf/Holmgren) or Dimitroff in Atlanta (who was groomed by Pioli).

Can anyone name the guy who preceded Chuck Noll in Pittsburgh without Googling it?

Hint: He succeeded Vince Lombardi with the Redskins and coached in the NFL as an assistant into the 1980s. (He's also still alive).

I could see Reid quitting if he has to fire an assistant that he doesn't want to fire, but I agree that Lurie isn't going to fire Reid.

Rick's devotion to mediocrity is admirable.

Coughlin keeps his job, but he's only under contract through next season. Does he get an extention? Does he say that next year his his last?
