Martz has been fired in Detroit, San Francisco and now Chicago. In the first two locations the head coaches (Martinelli and Singletary) wanted to emphasize establishing a tough, physical running game and let Martz go. The next season the respective offenses averaged about a touchdown a game less and the head coaches got fired. Are we seeing a pattern here?

I think Martz's work in Detroit where he had people believing that Jon Kitna, who I think was the second oldest starter in the league after Favre, was a serviceable quarterback is one of the great coaching jobs in recent NFL history. Detroit was 8-8 the year Martz got fired. The offense was pretty good but the defense was awful. The next year Kitna collapsed and the Lions whiffed the season.

To be fair, I don't think anyone wanted to work for Marinelli or Singletary either...

As Florio pointed out, there was also the weird dynamic of Martz working for Lovie, about 10 years after Lovie had worked for Martz. That has to be some sort of blow to the ego ... working for a guy you helped promote and nurse, somebody who's a half-assed coach (but who appears to be unfireable).

I'm sure the dynamic was strange, but I wonder how much the two of them worked together when they were in St. Louis. There are plenty of teams where an HC with an offensive background has almost no interaction with the DC, and not because they don't like each other...

Lovie was gone by the time Martz had his health issues in St. Louis.

Actually, now that I think about it, Lovie took a couple Rams coaches with him to Chicago. So that might not have sat too well with Martz.

    Crennel staying in Kansas City.

The KC defense has potential, so a defensive-minded coach is probably a good idea. But I also think that puts more pressure on Cassel to finally live up to the expectations.

McDaniels joining the Pats immediately. That's an interesting one. I'm not surprised that it's happening, I'm just surprised it's happening so quickly. Not clear if O'Brien is leaving immediately or not.

I think it's another case of not liking what else is out there.

The Chiefs looked good late in the season after Crennel took over, but a few years ago the Niners finished strong enough that Singletary was retained and we all know how that worked out.

I like the move though. It's not a long term move, but what is in the NFL these days? Glad to see Romeo get a second chance.

This is like Dirk Diggler crawling back to ask Jack Horner for forgiveness.

Were there issues between Belichick and McCoach after he left?

There was some tension last season when McDaniels was investigated for taping signals before the London game.
