I still think Luck is going to refuse to go to Indy.

Caldwell never should have been a NFL head coach. The Colts gave him the job because that's what Dungy wanted.

I have lost track of any change in cap rules that might have come about under the new CBA, but I'm pretty sure that if a player is traded, the remaining portion of prorated bonus accelerates into that year immediately. So if it's a sign-now-trade-later, the Colts would lose $28M of cap space this year or a bit less than that next year, depending on whether they would trade him before or after the start of the fiscal year.

I could be wrong, but I think that's about how it works.

Problem with that is that Indy is still in a position of strength to go ahead and draft him anyway. With Manning still in their back pocket, they can tell Luck they aren't going to trade him or the pick and he'll have to hold out and re-enter the draft next year. The Colts would receive a compensatory pick and Luck would lose a year of earning power in a league that gives players a pretty short shelf life.

And even if the Colts do decide they'll trade him, they won't necessarily have to take pennies on the dollar in a trade because of the above threat.

Having Manning still around gives them a lot of leverage to tell Luck that if he's not on their roster next year, he won't be on any NFL roster.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, that I don't know if Manning has enough years left in him to pass up on using the No. 1 pick for a future franchise QB.

And if Manning can't handle that, I think the Colts would be better off jettisoning Manning, as much as I hate to say it. The 49ers did that, even though Montana could still play, and it worked out well for them.

I can't think of the last time an NFL team let a franchise star go too early and it came back to bite them.

In the NFL, it's almost always better to let a guy go too early than too late.

Not an unfamiliar script for Stanford QBs.

Maybe Luck can force a trade from the Colts to the Broncos and replace Tebow. [/SportsJournalists.com folds upon itself]

If I'm Luck, I say, "The Colts are Peyton Manning's team."

Whether this is true or not doesn't matter. It makes him look good by saying, I'm not going to come in and force some Hall of Famer out of his job. It's not Elway refusing to go to Baltimore or Eli refusing to go to San Diego.

He wants to play immediately and based on recent moves in Indy, one would assume that if Peyton Manning is healthy (big if) that they want to keep him there.

Obviously the Colts don't have to trade the pick, but I don't think they're going to get into a pissing match with Luck if he truly doesn't want to go there...

Luck has already stated that he will be happy to play for anyone.

Interesting theory I heard on the radio today (Money from the Petros and Money Show) - the Colts waited until Fisher was hired by the Rams before firing Caldwell so they could avoid having to explain why they didn't go after Fisher to their fans and instead go after a cheaper, young assistant.

Couldn't they just have told fans they've already had enough experience losing playoff games at home and really don't want to go through that for 10 more years?
