Running 2012 NFL coaches carousel thread

  1. It could be argued that success in college isn't so much Xs and Os but recruiting.

How many - if any - mediocre college coaches had success at the NFL level?

    Bill Walsh.

Dennis Green had some success at the NFL level despite going 26–63 at Northwestern and Stanford. Tom Coughlin helped Boston College turnaround in the early 1990s, but he didn't get them to national title contention or anything close to that.

Talk about your one-and-done head coaches in the NFL.

The Bucs seem to yearn to be irrelevant again.

  5. I wouldn't count Coughlin as a mediocre at BC. No, there was no national title, but he was pretty good. Certainly better than medicore.

    I forgot about Denny Green.
    I couldn't think of any.

  6. No.

Walsh was at Stanford for what a year? Prior to that he was a NFL assistant and OC. A cup of coffee at Stanford and then back to the NFL.
    I don't think he qualifies.

Steve Mariucci spent one glorious 6-6 year at Cal before taking over the 49ers. He reached the NFC championship game in his first season and made the playoffs four times in six years.

Green turned around a pretty bad Stanford team pretty quickly.

I think as Walsh, Green and Harbaugh have proven, if you can win there, you can win in the NFL.

Mooch was given a lot of the credit for Favre's development with the Packers and the Niners wanted to hire him away from Cal as the OC and HC in waiting but Seifert got pissed and quit. So it kind of took a perfect storm for Mooch to make that jump.

I think it's safe to say that Mooch is a lot more appreciated in San Fran now than when he was when he was coaching there.

I think he's a good coach, but I think Millen sucked the life out of him in Detroit. I think as soon as Millen wouldn't let him get rid of Harrington, I think Mooch all but begged to get fired. Honestly, I can't say I blame the guy.

So you're saying that Ty Willingham should have his cell phone on just in case?

His name came up in every coaching search for a while and still pops up now and then, but he seems entirely happy doing the NFL Network thing, and is pretty good. Also one of the few coaches out there who really is a family man, and TV work doesn't cut into that quite so much.
