There are two answers to that: 1. Golfers have to play their foul balls. 2. Golf ain't baseball, or basketball or football. Why does everyone compare golf to team sports, or expect golf's decorum among its players and fans to sink to the level of team sports?
Just let golf have its rules and customs and quit trying to make it something it's not. Seems to be team sports can take a few things from golf, not the other way around.

Oh, I agree that lots of sports can learn from others. I just think some golfers are a bit too anal about "Quiet, please".

But that's the nature of the sport. Good golf fans appreciate it. Why does it have to be otherwise? There are enough sports where fans get loud, stupid, obnoxious, profane, drunk, crude, rude and otherwise socially unacceptable. Leave golf alone in this regard.

And I need absolute quiet in order to write my story, too.

Fine. Knock yourself out. I just don't know why you want fans to be drunk, stupid and loud at golf tournaments the way they are everywhere else

Sergio Garcia would be outraged at the Phoenix Open.

It's really not the sound, it's the expectation. Garcia (or whoever else) would be fine at Phoenix (on the 17th hole) because he'd expect it. If, however, the expectation is quiet, then a noise would be seriously distracting.

Let me clarify.... I'm not talking about heckling players. I'm talking about routine, run-of-the-mill conversation or movement, scratching your butt when it itches, etc. If I'm 30 yards off the green and calling in info on headset to my producer in the TV truck (in a low voice) and someone finds that distracting, sheesh.

Garcia, speaking at an event Monday in London hosted by his sponsors, didn't back down from further discussing his beef with Woods.

"He called me a whiner," Garcia said. "That's probably right. It's also probably the first thing he's told you guys that's true in 15 years. I know what he is like. You guys are finding out."

This is turning into one of the most awesomely bitchiest catfights in sports. I love it. Would be even better if Sergio could win the big one.

Eldrick, asked today if he had any thought of contacting El Nino to clear up the situation.

    "No."

    Obvious pairing coming at Merion.

It would be a slightly better catfight if Sergio, oh, I don't know ... had actually won something.

Nevertheless, that is an awesome quote.
