Yeah. Because he can hit. And because he is becoming a big name, which ESPN loves.

He isn't a good defensive player, though. Of course he isn't as bad as he has been so far -- because, really, who is going to commit 120 errors in a season -- but if there's a feeling that he has been a positive contributor on defense before this, that feeling is misplaced.

 

... and he's stretching with the wrong leg.

 

I don't think anyone is arguing that he's the best defensive shortstop to ever play. Rizzo said he was ELITE. Sounds to me like he is, as an overall shortstop. Last I checked, shortstops were allowed to hit, too.

 

You should tell Desmond he's allowed to hit!

 

I mean, based on his history, I suspect he will be just fine. And if not, oh well. He's likely gone in 6 months anyway.
