It's would be interesting to have an honest conversation with some coaches about what really makes a job a good one. What would really be a step up for Few? He has everything he needs to win at Gonzaga and will always be a legend there.

So what if Duke offers in a few years? It's certainly in the top handful of programs. Premier conference. The university accommodates the team in every way necessary to win big. It's ESPN's preferred program. But is trying to live up to K as the next guy there really a better position for him?

You always want to be the guy who follows the guy who follows the guy.

Guys have been following Wooden at UCLA for 42 years. Hasn't worked for any of 'em.

When Walton got hurt in '87 and it was clear he'd never play again, I wrote a column that he should be UCLA coach. Clearly insane on a deadline approaching and no ideas days, but my boss, a good Eastern basketball fan who knew nothing about the sport past the DC and Philadelphia suburbs, waved it through. "That'll be a talker."

They said that about Georgetown. Great academic school. Urbane city. Total support of the school. Large endowment. Private school to avoid prying eyes. Premier Conference, at the time.

Duke is Duke because of the coach. When he's gone, Duke will be just another ACC team.

This would be on par with that Duke-Maryland miracle about a decade ago.

Wow, Kansas comes all the way back. Huggy Bear seeing that $25,000 bonus for beating Kansas going by the wayside. Of course, he donates it to cancer research, but still ...
