Smith and Wooden qualify as equivalent legends.

But seriously, Duke has five titles in 25 years and is the preferred program of the most influential sports media organization in the country. There's not much to gain from comparing them to St. John's.

The point was, Let's see what happens to Duke when Shashevsky leaves.

When K retires, he's going to leave behind a loaded roster and Cameron will still be packed for every game with tons of ESPN hype. The next coach also inherits a palace for basketball headquarters. Duke may very well hire the next Matt Doherty, running an outstanding program is hard and expectations will be out of whack, but if he fails it won't be because the pieces aren't there.

Georgetown was already terrible and struggling to fill half the seats in an arena across town when Thompson up and quit in the middle of a season. It's only just recently upgraded to the kind of practice facility and office space other top programs have had for a decade-plus, at least.

Raleigh TV station says Mark Gottfried is done after this season and that State has reached out to Archie Miller:

Sources say NC State will part ways with Gottfried

Miller makes sense, since he's an alumnus who is successful at a lower-tier job. But he's probably the hottest mid-major commodity (non-Mark Few division) and would probably be high up on the lists of, say, Indiana or Ohio State, both of which have had more recent success and neither of which have Debbie Yow as a potential boss.

Did Mark at least keep it in his pants while he was in the Triangle?

Did he have trouble running the Box and 1 before the Raleigh job?

His likely end-of-the-year firing in Tuscaloosa got turned into a midseason hush hush departure when he allegedly got caught making time with a coed.

An Alabama coed sleeping with a BASKETBALL coach? That's like the starlet who screwed a writer to get on a picture.

How low does that "coed"s self esteem have to be to go after the basketball coach at a football school? That's like ordering the enchiladas at Morton's.

A friend of mine who was a dance team member late in the David Hobbs era (we were in college together but didn't meet until years later) dated one of his assistant coaches for quite a while. Years later, when he was out of the profession and struggling to sell cars, he came back around seeing if he could borrow money from her dad, one of the more notable bookies in Walker County (and a season ticket holder).

Is ESPN doing a 30 for 30 on Cal? Seriously, how many times can Kentucky be on this season?

And Cliff Barnes will coach at Syracuse after Boeheim leaves ... Clemson, Texas, Tennessee ... all orange.
